September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month - an internationally recognised month where the childhood cancer community comes together, and everyone is encouraged to show their support for the children, young people and families who have been affected by childhood cancer. This year, the focus is on the importance of research in creating better futures for children with cancer. In 1977, when Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) (the charity we raise funds for) was first founded, childhood cancer survival rates were around 2 in 10. Today, survival rates are around 8 in 10. This amazing progress is driven by research. Research has led not only to more effective treatments, but kinder treatments that have fewer harsh side effects and long-term effects. Money raised for Ruby’s fund is already being put to work on vital research - & this month, we have 14 amazing fundraisers taking part in events to raise money for Ruby’s fund so we can continue to support further research. During this month we’ll also be sharing information about signs and symptoms of cancer in children and young people - and we’d love it if you could help spread the word. Cancer is relentless. It touches us in ways that change our lives forever. Today, our colleague Canan Oral shares how over 18 months, she faced the heartbreak of losing three close friends to the fierce grips of cancer. Her story is a profound reminder of the devastating toll this disease takes and why our fight against it is so important. Last week we celebrated Australia's Biggest Morning Tea in our offices across the country. Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is an annual community fundraising event organised by Cancer Council Australia to raise vital funds for people impacted by cancer and for research. Cancer touches the lives of so many people around the world, and it's time for us to come together as a community and make a difference. There is often a deep, cynical sigh of ‘really?’ when an honours list is announced. Yet amongst the celebs, politicians and corporate leaders that seemingly make the integrity of the lists questionable, there are numerous unsung individuals who work diligently for the greater good, often with little financial reward. One such individual this year is Dr Shara Cohen FRCPath, FIBMS, FRSB, BEM who quite rightly received the British Empire Medal for services to Women in Stem and to Cancer Patients and their families.   Shara, amongst other projects, is the founder of Cancer Care Parcel an independent company that supports the cancer community in many ways. We are both delighted and honoured that this wonderful organisation has chosen to become an #ORBmember. Cancer Care Parcel partners with charities around the world to help them fundraise and raise awareness. To support their work, the company offers a selection of lovely gifts to purchase via their online shop designed specifically for cancer patients to alleviate discomfort, promote relaxation and enhance well-being throughout treatment.  When funds are available, Cancer Care Parcel also donates gifts directly or through the charities they partner with. Shara also cares deeply about the environment and works hard to meet the sustainability challenges everyone organisation is faced with including, but not limited to, hosting websites on renewable energy, using eco-friendly packaging and planting a tree for every product purchased. Every year the Dry July Foundation runs a champaign designed to encourages you to go alcohol-free in July to raise funds for people affected by cancer. Join Arterial’s A Team as we Dry July this year for the Pancare Foundation. The funds raised through Dry July will provide invaluable services to cancer patients, their families, and carers.
