Micro-apprenticeships are a game-changer in bridging the UK manufacturing skills gap. With over one-third of vacancies in the sector going unfilled due to a lack of relevant qualifications or experience (Make UK), it's clear we need innovative solutions. During 2022/23, there were 752,000 apprentices in England - a promising figure, but significantly down from 909,000 in 2016/17. This underscores the importance of new, flexible training models like micro-apprenticeships. These shorter, targeted programs can provide the foundational skills necessary for specific roles, offering a quicker route for individuals to gain relevant experience and for employers to build a competent workforce. One of the standout benefits of micro-apprenticeships is that they reduce attrition rates in traditional apprenticeship programs, which often see double-digit drop-out percentages. By giving individuals exposure to the workplace and specific tasks, micro-apprenticeships help create a wider talent pipeline, making it easier for SMEs to invest in skills. Formalising this approach could be a significant step toward solving the UK's longstanding skills challenges and bringing a new generation of talent into the manufacturing industry.
