Why does work experience matter now more than ever? Surprisingly, ‘lack of experience’ is the UK’s top reason for job rejection. Though I missed out on work experience due to COVID-19, what got me my job at Indulge was joining a leadership shadowing program, which turned into a week of work experience. If I hadn't taken that chance, I wouldn't be here. I recently asked a professional in the industry for advice for marketing beginners, and they said: experience. But why is it so important? People with lots of hands-on experience have put in the time and effort to learn and improve continuously. They have seen different systems, used different software and experimented with different methods. But it’s not just about skills—it's also about attitude. Your approach to networking is heavily influenced by your attitude, which is key to making meaningful connections. In fact, Marketing Week reported that more than half of CMOs (58%) and senior marketing leaders (64%) stress the significance of building professional networks. Companies now invest in culture, hiring based on a person's attitude and experiences rather than just their degree or qualifications. Recently, I attended Marketing Careers Night hosted by CMA NXT, featuring panelists MOD Kyla Fleischauer, Manager, Member Engagement at the Canadian Marketing Association; Candice Dixon, Senior Director, Marketing Operations at SEPHORA; Sarah Baptiste, Creative Accounts Manager at Encore Canada; Varun C., Senior Manager, Customer Growth at Scotiabank; Rohan Sarna, Product Marketing Manager at Google; and Jason Serafica, SEO Specialist at Jelly Digital Marketing & PR Agency. Here are some of the takeaways: Embrace Failure: The panel emphasized the importance of embracing failure, if everything goes according to plan, one may miss out on valuable lessons. Mentorship: Building authentic relationships with mentors was highlighted as essential for personal and professional growth. They encouraged attendees to consider who they want in their corner and how they can connect with them. Strength of Weak Ties: Opportunities in one's career often arise from connections outside of their immediate circle. They underscored the significance of nurturing relationships beyond one's inner circle. Proactivity and Boldness: Attendees were encouraged to be proactive and bold. Whether it's addressing issues or sharing innovative ideas, they stressed the importance of speaking up and taking initiative. Flexibility and Openness: It's okay to keep various options open in one's career journey. The panelists emphasized the importance of staying adaptable as the marketing landscape continues to evolve. Work/Life Balance: Maintaining a healthy work/life balance is crucial to prevent burnout. During the Q&A session, several questions were addressed: Advice for Job Seekers, specifically students: The panel advised job seekers to explore alternative avenues beyond traditional job applications, such as gaining experience through volunteering or taking on projects. Persistence and building a strong network were also emphasized. “Throw enough darts, and one will stick” Key Characteristics for Employees: Attributes such as protectiveness, coachability, curiosity, dependability, and cultural fit were deemed essential by the panel. They stressed the importance of demonstrating these qualities in the workplace. Applying for Corporate Roles: Newcomers were encouraged not to underestimate their skills and global experiences. Rather than focusing on perceived deficiencies, they should highlight their diverse perspectives and adaptability. Agency vs. Brands: The choice between working for an agency or a brand depends on individual preferences and strengths. While working for a brand allows for deep immersion, agency work offers exposure to various industries and demands adaptability. Overall, the event provided valuable insights and advice for aspiring marketing professionals, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, resilience, and proactive career management. #networking #digitalmarketing #career #learning

"How do I get promoted?" is a query we hear often from ambitious professionals. While there's no ‘one size fits all’ answer, sharing some insights from my experiences. A promotion is an employer action: a higher rank/ level/ grade, typically associated with increased responsibility and growth in pay. Throughout employment, promotions are the biggest source of increase in pay, apart from switching jobs. Your ‘growth’ journey can be boosted with these actions… Your Work: o Understand expectations: Have you read through your job description thoroughly? Ensure that you understand key deliverables and how success will get measured. Do check the performance norms for your grade/ peer level and ensure that you exceed them. o Getting on the critical path: Do you know your manager’s key deliverables and are you responsible for any of them? Ask your manager how you can help. This ensures that s/he is more vested in your outcomes and reduces roadblocks to achieving them.   o When to say yes: Say ‘yes’ when complex or key additional responsibilities come up. Delivering beyond your regular scope will help you get noticed by multiple stakeholders across an organisation. Remember do not commit what you cannot deliver. Your Skills: o Leverage learning opportunities: Build capability for your current job, as well as roles at the next level. Dedicate time each week to your own learning! o Learn from colleagues: Understand how peers have acquired key skills. Additionally, observe the traits and personas exhibited by role models and check if there is room to learn. Your Personal Brand: o Brand attributes: Consider the top performer in your team – what are their known attributes – eg, helpful, knowledgeable, committed? o How are you perceived: Gather feedback from your, peers, manager/s, stakeholders to understand strengths/ gaps. Work diligently to improve how others experience you and remember that ‘perception beats reality’. o Finding your voice: Utilise opportunities to share views in internal meetings or external events. When you express yourself, do your teammates hear you, understand you, agree with you, and act on your suggestions/ ideas? Traversing the journey from mere expression to influencing stakeholders will help you become a natural leader.   o Build strong relationships: Do you wish your colleagues on their special days? Do you listen to people patiently? Do you manage differences well? Are you available when your colleagues need you? Do you meet a variety of people during coffee/ lunch breaks? Building good professional relationships requires genuine interest in people around you. You may be individually brilliant but if others also speak highly about you, your career can go into high gear. Always believe in yourself, despite career setbacks. Dear LinkedIn connections, I have a confession. A story of a Hotelier to a Marketer. In 2017, I was a trainee in a 5-star hotel for $40/month. In 2018, I worked in dominos for $100/month. In 2019, I lost my job due to covid. I'm not ashamed to say this. I was so proud to do this. Since then, I've been a failed YouTuber. A failed Hotelier. Due to inconsistency. A Marketer. To start a #digitalmarketingagency. This is all to say that you don't have to "know it". No one knows what your career will look like in 10 years. Stay consistent in what you are doing. A simple key to success is "CONSISTENCY" What you may not see? It took 6+ years to choose the right career path. What you may not think? That was very hard. What you may never see? A clear & straight path. "It's often said, 'The journey is just as significant as the destination.'" Heck no! It's the journey. And the journey is beautiful with a lot of obstacles. Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life... True or false? To me, it is both - a love and the work to maintain and grow it! This week, work turned into a fabulous three days in Lisbon with career practitioners from around the globe. What were my top takeaways? 1️⃣ More than ever, we are shouldered with our own career development. We thought companies might take this on when the market for talent tightened, but that has not happened. ✨️ Help clients negotiate for continuing education dollars and days. ✨️ Guide clients to research and choose training to fill their future skills gaps. 2️⃣ Video is where we need to be. Our clients of all ages are getting career content via video. #careertok has 5 billion views! ✨️ We need more career practitioners using video so people can find quality content. 3️⃣ People need help refining and promoting their uniquely human skills. ✨️ Emotional intelligence, leadership presence, and relationship building (networking) are skills of the future. The pandemic put a bit of rust on these skills and they're needed now more than ever. It was a delight to be surrounded by professionals walking the walk to develop themselves. When is too late? At 15 I spent 2 weeks on my work experience at the local fancy Hotel - and for better or worse this experience shaped the rest of my life. I spent the next 20 years working in the Hospitality Industry, studying for it at Uni and running Pubs, Restaurants and Hotels, even weathering the storm during Covid and re-entering the industry as soon as it re-opened. Then something changed, and I decided to exit the industry. I spent a year in recruitment, which wasn't for me but I learnt a lot about the world of sales, which lead me to Sharp, where I joined the Sales Academy with a group of 6 other Graduates (10 years after I graduated). We spent some time learning about the company, ourselves and the world of sales before hitting the ground running and generating leads for the business. 6 months in, I was given the opportunity to join the Corporate world, just to try it on and see how it fit, and now 6 months later I am part of the team, while still continually learning on the job and completing my apprenticeship. What's right today might not be right tomorrow, and it's never too late to start again - in careers, hobbies, relationships. I'm sure you've seen the pictures about how JK Rowling didn't write a book until she was in her 30s, or Ray Kroc founding McDonalds at 52 - but you don't have to think so big when hitting reset. "I get paid fairly at work." It's something many businesses score poorly on in workplace surveys across industries. For those that are performing well, there are perks but what if you're not getting noticed? Early in my #Specsavers career, I had a supervisor, an assistant manager, and a manager. I felt safe knowing I could go to them with my problems and they’d help me deal with them, no matter how big. Not only that, they knew how to operate the business. They looked after us team members and also the business. This might be you. Aligned with the brand, going above and beyond for your customers, counseling your colleagues, doing everything your supervisor is doing, but just not getting paid for it. So how can you get paid more? 💰 #JimRohn said, "We get paid for bringing value to the marketplace... not the time." Ok, so, how can you add more value? #UrsulaBurns started as a summer intern at #Xerox in 1980 and eventually rose to the top, demonstrating outstanding leadership and dedication, eventually becoming the first African-American woman to lead a Fortune 500 company. That doesn’t happen if you can’t be relied on, if you’re coming in late to work, or if you have the attitude of a 13-year-old. Take a look at yourself in the mirror. 🪞 #SteveJobs had to adjust his leadership style and his approach to innovation. It’s this introspection that led to Apple's success. 🍏 Do you play well with others? What's your skill level like? What's your ability to influence like? How empathetic are you? 🤝 Think of others first. What can you offer your workplace that will: Relieve pressure from your manager 😰 Increase productivity of the team 💪 Save the manager's time ⏰ Improve KPIs 📈 Know thyself. Know what motivates you and articulate that to your employer. My mentor once told me, most of us are after one of these: a) Money 💵 b) Position/Power 💪 c) Recognition 🏆 Collaborate. Work with your manager to achieve targets you both agree on. Have regular, protected one-on-one time, fortnightly. Feedback is a really important tool that will help you achieve your goal. Listen, plan, and take massive action on what you get from your one-on-ones. Hold yourself accountable.
