Happy Social Mobility Day! 🎉🇬🇧 Today, the UK celebrates Social Mobility Day which aims to raise awareness of social mobility and the incredible work organisations do to foster positive change. Since our founding, we have always been inspired by the UK's progress in creating equal opportunities, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. This includes the ways they build public awareness, curate youth programmes, and offer work experience placements. And so, doing our part, we have curated a quick carousel to share more about social mobility, why it matters, and how you can join us in creating a more equitable future for everyone. We look forward to learning more from their experiences, continuing to build on our own knowledge, and eventually applying these insights to our own communities as well. Wishing our UK counterparts a fantastic Social Mobility Day! ✨ #SocialMobilityDay

To improve social mobility in the UK, employers need to put socio-economic diversity, equity and inclusion at the heart of their organisations This is one of the reasons why Making The Leap founded by Tunde Banjoko OBE initiated Social Mobility Day 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆? Social mobility tells us how likely we are to climb up (or fall down) the economic or social ladder of life Most studies focus on intergenerational mobility, which describes movement in status during a person’s own lifetime, from childhood to adulthood While sociologists track the changing status of people in terms of social classes, based on the jobs people and their parents do; economists on the other hand traditionally assess mobility patterns by studying individual or family earnings and income For further information on marking 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘆 as an individual and/or for your organisation you will find resources here: ℹ https://lnkd.in/eStgfXWY Want to know more about how organisations can increase socio-economic diversity? Reflections on Social Mobility Day. A little background, I come from a low socio economic background, an unsettled childhood and had little as a child, but we were fed & clean. My late brother and I used to feel awful when it was non uniform day, often being mocked for the clothes we wore. We didn't qualify for free school meals - my mum worked in a factory and my dad used to take most of her wages, leaving her a small amount each week to run the household. I could go on. Coming from a lower socio economic background has a profound impact on how you "show up" in the workplace, this can translate into a difference in treatment (unintentional/intentional) - I believe that socio economic status should be a protected characteristic and I spoke about this at the Social Mobility Business Seminar. The pressure on those who come from a low socio economic background "making it" in an industry they are not normally represented in can be high. Why? The social norms: the use of language (new 'posh' words), unspoken rules, a lack of sponsorship and access to informal networks, the pressure to speak & dress differently and trying to learn about topics and hobbies you have not been exposed to. What can this result in? Generally, a lack of advocacy, sponsorship, not being seen or recognised in the workplace - this can then lead to negative career outcomes for these individuals. According to research, those from a lower socio economic background take 2 years longer to get to the same grade as someone from a higher socio economic background. Whilst this might not feel like long, we cannot forget the lost salary, benefits as well as career lag - this is not due to lower performance levels (the exception being some parts of the legal sector). The issue becomes prominent as you become senior, you can't hide behind your work and I do sometimes feel out of my depth but as some of my friends say, "you need to get comfortable in environments that feel uncomfortable (because you do belong here)" and "put yourself in the company of those that you are not naturally drawn to (don't assume the worst - they will want to talk to you)". I am getting better here and now enjoy different experiences. Let's make it our duty to make everyone feel comfortable and included, be curious and ask questions, be interested and learn about different team members and explore if there are any barriers that exist and then challenge those barriers and systems. If you sit back and think about different life experiences, they bring a richness to the workplace and are likely to lead to better business and societal outcomes. We can all be allies - I will continue to do what I can, inside and outside my role. The #SocialMobility challenge can only be addressed fully when all young people have the chance to build their future, no batter their background or postcode. All too often social mobility relies too much on being able to move to areas where life chances are higher, but we work to ensure young people in rural areas get access to opportunities to build rewarding futures. The UK Social Mobility Awards have published latest research report today – “Reaching Potential? Advancing Social Mobility in 2022-23”! #SocialMobility is fundamental to a well functioning society. If young adults do not think they can ever progress beyond the socio-ecomomic status of their upbringing, then they will not put in the needed effort and hence society will be robbed of the brightest minds from the most diverse backgrounds. If you’re an employer looking for inspiration on where to start your social mobility journey – or what do to next – the report provides valuable evidence on how to take action in three key areas below. 📊 Building the foundations – collecting socio-economic background data, developing a social mobility strategy, and involving passionate leaders. 🪜 Doing the work – outreach, recruitment, retention, and progression initiatives focused on people from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds (SEBs). 📢 Taking the lead – advocacy to increase awareness and action on social mobility. Check out our infographics, executive summary, and full report via the link below https://lnkd.in/eMBDAmhY

A perspective on the importance of social mobility from our Chief Executive Officer, Andy Golding 💭 Social mobility refers to the ability of individuals to move up the socio-economic ladder, which is often determined by factors such as education, employment opportunities, and income. In support of #SocialMobilityDay, we are focusing our efforts on educating colleagues around its impact, sharing regional data and what we are doing to buck the trend in our industry ✔️ #ShareMoments #WeAreOSB
