🌍 Over 600 million people in Africa still lack access to electricity (International Energy Agency, 2021)—that’s nearly twice the population of the United States without reliable power.
As the continent works toward sustainable development, climate tech solutions are becoming indispensable. In a recent article, Maxime Bouan highlights how Seedstars Africa Ventures is strategically investing to bridge this gap.
Beacon Power Services (BPS), based in Lagos, Nigeria, is one of the key players in this space. Founded by Bimbola Adisa, BPS is revolutionizing energy distribution with real-time data on electricity grids.
This innovation is empowering cities like Lagos and Accra to improve grid reliability, cut energy waste, and enhance efficiency.
Discover how investments like these are shaping the future of energy access in Africa and how you can get involved. 🌱

TODAY: The 8th edition of the Africa Energy Marketplace (AEMP) opens its doors in Abuja, #Nigeria for an in-person discussion on solutions to the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector.
WATCH LIVE at 9:15AM GMT+1: https://bit.ly/4dLaTQf
During previous online sessions, participants proposed a series of policy recommendations in a broad range of areas including regulatory and policy compliance. In Abuja, participants will deliberate further on these recommendations and set forth a plan of action to guide Nigeria towards a sustainable energy future.
Wale Shonibare, Director of Energy Financial Solutions, Policy, and Regulation at the African Development Bank described how policy dialogue shapes Nigeria's energy landscape: “Through collaborative dialogue, we are laying the groundwork for a series of policy recommendations aimed at shaping Nigeria's energy landscape and guiding the eventual implementation of policies. The 8th AEMP serves as a crucial platform for policy advocacy, facilitating the formulation of a comprehensive National Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan, in line with Nigeria’s 2023 Electricity Act.”
The #AEMP8 is convened by the African Development Bank Group to facilitate policy dialogue among governments, policymakers, the private sector, industry experts, and development partners to resolve bottlenecks and pave the way for investments in Africa’s energy sector.

ICYMI: Bringing private sector finance into Africa's electricity grids remains one of the big challenges and opportunities for the continent as it embarks on a clean energy transition that has the potential to create millions of jobs and drive economic growth.
Last week our Head of Business Development, Christopher Flavin was a keynote speaker at the FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank and Solar Plaza 'Future of Energy' conference. He spoke on a panel on private sector involvement in the transmission & distribution space.
Chris described the growing interest in private funding models for transmission in Africa as evidenced in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and most recently South Africa. He discussed the role that transmission infrastructure plays in delivering energy access as well as supporting the energy transition.
He explained:
"Transmission is essential for electricity access, sustainable power networks and, crucially, for the energy transition. Gridworks has been working on provately funded transmission projects in Africa for several years and is now bringing them to fruition."
Chris also talked about the challenges associated with developing greenfield infrastructure, and the role that multilateral development banks can have in helping to boost capacity at key agencies within African governments.
Thanks to FMO and Solar Plaza for a great event.
You can read our recent report which addresses the challenge and highlights models that can facilitate private investment in transmission on the continent: https://lnkd.in/eTXWrgDM#AfricaEnergy#transmission#energytransition#electricitygrid

-ENGAGING COMMUNITIES: A KEY TO ENERGY INDUSTRY GROWTH-
Recently, I collaborated with Young Energy Leaders and Experts from across Sub-Saharan Africa, including Sudan, Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, and Tanzania, in the Innovation Hub Challenge organized by Future Energy Leaders The Netherlands of the World Energy Council.
The challenge, divided by continents, aimed to discuss and exchange ideas for solution-driven tools or mechanisms to address challenges faced by the energy industry, such as finance, a just-energy transition, lack of community engagement, lack of infrastructure, among others.
Participating in this challenge was a great opportunity for me to learn, share the Nigerian perspective, and listen to ideas from other Sub-Saharan members.
Our team identified lack of community engagement as a barrier to energy accessibility in both the continent and the world, citing reports like the World Bank's. We analyzed how this challenge affects the industry and proposed a technological innovative solution.
Please take less than 3 minutes to watch the video below, which provides deep insights into our work.
I want to thank our team lead supervisors - Justice Ohene-Akoto, MBA, PMP & ✪ Dr. Maxwell Ampong, DBA, and all members of our team ( Omnia Ali Abdulraheim 🇸🇩 , Chinenye Ajayi , Tosin George , Andrew Auruku , Timothy Ogenyi and others) for the fantastic sessions alongside the FEL Team - Rik van der Vossen and the host of others for the guidance.
I also encourage governments, energy stakeholders, and industry experts to engage with communities when formulating policies and attracting infrastructure for energy accessibility in Nigeria, Africa, and the world.
