One of my biggest factors, if not the biggest, in deciding to go to law school had to do with finances. Everyone has advice at the ready regarding taking the LSAT, picking a school, writing personal statements etc. But what is something you wish you had done or known regarding finances before going to law school? Additionally, what is something you wish every pre-law or current law student knew about financing their legal education? I'll start: it's okay to pick a law school based on money. Many people do this but it's not talked about enough. I took the LSAT just to see where I could get in with a scholarship and that was how I picked out my school. I know: not very *glamorous* or *inspirational* but it's honest. Additionally, I wish more students knew that finding aid or scholarships doesn't have to stop once you're done with FAFSA. You might qualify for scholarships your 2L year or find a scholarship contest sponsored by a law firm etc. It may not cover everything but it's something. Thoughts? #lawstudents #lawschool #finances #prelaw

Today signifies a pivotal milestone in the journey of our LEAP Fellows and other aspiring law students toward a legal career. It’s the day when many of you will take the next step by submitting your seat deposit to secure your spot in law school. 💼 Here are some helpful tips on navigating law school seat deposits: 💰 Seat deposits typically range from $200 to $500+ and are often nonrefundable. They help schools gauge your commitment and consider financial aid. ⏰ While the first deposit deadline is usually around April 15 or May 1, check your acceptance letter for specific instructions. Some schools may require multiple deposits. 🤝 Your seat deposit impacts other aspiring law students. By confirming your intent to attend one school, you open up opportunities for those on waiting lists and aid the admission process. 🔒 Remember, seat deposits aren’t usually binding commitments, but be aware of each school’s policies. If you are unsure, you can submit two seat deposits. If you need more time or want to negotiate scholarship offers, reach out to admissions officers. LEAP is here to support you every step of the way. Best of luck to our Fellows and all future law students! #LEAPfellows #LawSchoolPrep #LawSchoolJourney #FutureLawyer #LegalEducation #PreLaw #LSATPrep #LegalCareer #LawStudentCommunity #LawSchoolBound #FutureLawyers

👋 Hello Toronto Lawyers! We are introducing “Did You Know”, an initiative from TLA’s Education Committee. In these monthly posts members of our Education Committee will be sharing with you practical and informative tips & tricks, lessons learned and cautionary tales. This month’s “Did You Know” is brought to you by Michelle Stephenson. Michelle is a civil litigator at Corman Feiner and a member of TLA’s Education Committee. Did you know that failing to disclose a settlement with some, but not all, defendants in an action could result in your client’s claim being stayed as an abuse of process? Full stop. And plaintiff counsel’s nightmare. This common law rule includes classic Pierringer Agreements (where a defendant settles for their proportionate share of the damages and is removed from the litigation) and Mary Carter Agreements (where the settling defendant remains in the litigation). But it is not limited to these agreements alone. The question counsel must ask themselves is “Does this agreement entirely change the landscape of the litigation?” And they must be able to answer that question quickly. If the answer is yes, the requirement is that the fact and terms of the settlement (apart from $ amounts) be disclosed immediately. Learn more about this topic and other common law and statutory timing considerations litigators must stay on top of at TLA’s upcoming program: Draconian Deadlines Civil Litigators Don’t Want to Miss – Thursday May 23, 2024. This is one you (truly) don’t want to miss! Register here: https://loom.ly/YL1WQAM #TLADidYouKnow

Our new report "A Law Degree Is No Sure Thing: Some Law School Graduates Earn Top Dollar, but Many Do Not" ranks the ROI of 186 law schools, and provides context on law school employment outcomes, bar-exam passage rates, and student-loan debt. What did we find? The ROI of a law school is closely associated with the selectivity of one’s alma mater. However, many law school graduates carry substantial student-loan debt, dimming some of the returns associated with a JD. Read here to learn more: https://bit.ly/4cfy1oD
