Being the trustee of a trust is one of the most crucial roles in the education system, but often one of the most overlooked. There is often too little knowledge of what a trustee should do, too few of the right trustees coming forwards and too little support to develop great trustees. This academic year, we are going to try and change that. Today we launch a new guide series, with the help of the fantastic Leora Cruddas CBE and Samira Sadeghi and Confederation of School Trusts, that will aim to demystify being a trustee and provide a launch pad for trustee CPD. We will publish a guide every month this year - and you can read the first one here: https://lnkd.in/ewr9BUYb Also this morning, Dan Worth has published this excellent in-depth analysis of the challenges we are facing when it comes to trustees and how some of those challenges are being tackled. There is excellent insight offered by the likes of Rebecca Boomer-Clark Claire Heald Joanne Coton Matthew Shanks FCCT and more You can read that here: https://lnkd.in/ewr9BUYb

Charter public school law and politics are very different based on the individual state of operation. Here are some quick facts about RI's that differentiate our sector from some others: - We only have 1 agency that can authorize charters (the State) - All charter public schools are nonprofits - Our schools are held to the highest standard of accountability of any school-type in the state. - Our teachers are held to the same certification standards as traditional public schools - Our schools receive less funding than traditional public schools, but have (on average) much greater outcomes for similar populations of students. - The majority of charters in RI are single-site and small. The few larger networks which we have are small to moderate in size and were selected to come to RI due to their unparalleled track records. And, like all states, ALL charters are free and public schools.

As a true solo practitioner (no paid support staff), it is sometimes hard to give back to the community with the number of pro bono hours the State Bar of Arizona recommends per year. Here's what the bar says about this: "ER 6.1. Voluntary Pro Bono Publico Service (a) A lawyer should voluntarily render public interest legal service. A lawyer may discharge this responsibility by rendering a minimum of fifty hours of service per calendar year by one or a combination of the following activities: (1) Providing professional services at no fee or at a substantially reduced fee to the poor or near poor or to organizations that have as a principal purpose promoting the interests of the poor or near poor, or to individuals, groups or organizations seeking to secure or protect civil rights, civil liberties or public rights; or (2) Providing services at no fee or at a substantially reduced fee in connection with law-related education sponsored by the Arizona Bar Foundation or activities for improving the law, the legal system or the legal profession; or (3) Providing professional or other law-related services at no fee or at a substantially reduced fee to charitable groups or organizations." Well, today I at least partly discharged this recommendation/requirement by spending the afternoon volunteering as a judge for the "We The People" high school mock congressional-hearing competition sponsored by the state bar and its Arizona Bar Foundation, held at Mesa Community College. If the level of intelligence, enthusiasm and professionalism displayed by the young people I encountered today is any indication, the future of our democracy (and judicial system, as I'm sure many of these youth will someday become lawyers and judges) are in very capable hands indeed.
