What doesn’t work in education in any subject area is narrowing the curriculum. What does work is abundancy. We can teach decoding, fluency, reading comprehension, phonics, read real books from real authors from different genres, spelling, grammar, explicit writing in different genres, analysis, cursive, mathmatics conceptually and explicitly, teach kids to look things up and research but also teach them to memorize so they build knowledge etc. We should also teach science, and social studies and music, and the arts (dance, theater, drawing, painting etc) and foreign language and stem starting in kindergarten with lots of time for unstructured play/ recess.

Awe In Education: Had the honor of presenting on the importance of Awe in education. So often we get caught up in the logistics of teaching / learning (e.g. exams, grading, planning, etc.) that its important to step back and capture the essence of why many of us got into education in the first place - to tap into the natural curiosity of learners through awe. We explored the 8 wonders of Awe (transcendence, nature, big ideas, life cycle, visual design, moral beauty, collective effervescence, music) and practical strategies on how to implement them in our practice. #awe #continuouslearning

Is teaching an art or a science? Teaching is both an art and a science. It is a science because the processes of planning a lesson follow the scientific procedure, starting from; • setting a lesson objective (hypothesis), • identifying resources for teaching, • linking the lesson with previous knowledge, • developing steps and activities to achieve the stated goals and eventually • evaluating whether or not the objectives have been achieved. If achieved, the teacher moves to the next lesson; if not, the teacher re-teaches the lesson. Similarly, teaching is an art because it adopts the creativity of arts to deliver the lesson and administer the resources and activities that have been scientifically selected and identified for the lesson. As an art, it also requires the use of the tools of art, such as; • visuals, • audios, • audiovisuals, • dance, • music, • drama (role play) and other creative means of lesson delivery. While science ensures the logical presentation of lessons, art ensures proper lesson delivery and retention. Hence, all the tools of science and art must be appropriately leveraged for lessons to be effective. Have you ever incorporated both the tools of science and art in your classroom? 'Call it what you want' but the 'love story' that is curriculum and popular culture 'hits different' when it comes to the everchanging factors of attention held in the classroom. It is up to us as educators to 'mastermind' the 'delicate' presentation of material. 'Long story short,' 'long live' educators using this 'style', it always adds 'happiness' to my day. Pursuing formal art education versus self-teaching each offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, depending on your goals, resources, and learning style. This is an important question for anyone considering a career in the creative field. So after giving this subject some thought here is a breakdown of what I see are the differences between attaining a formal art career and teaching yourself. Formal Art Education: Positives: · Structured Learning: Formal education provides a structured curriculum designed to develop your skills systematically. · Access to Resources: You gain access to a wide range of resources such as studios, equipment, and libraries. · Networking: Art schools often provide opportunities to connect with other artists, professors, and professionals in the field. · Feedback: Regular critique sessions can help you understand your strengths and areas for improvement. Negatives: · Cost: Formal education can be expensive, with tuition, fees, and art supplies adding up. · Time: It typically requires a significant time commitment, often several years. · Institutional Influence: Some artists feel that formal education can stifle creativity by imposing institutional norms and styles. Self-Teaching: Positives: · Flexibility: You can learn at your own pace and focus on areas that interest you the most. · Cost-Effective: Self-teaching can be more economical, as you can choose free or low-cost resources. · Freedom: You have the freedom to explore different styles and techniques without external pressure. · Authenticity: Self-teaching may help you develop a more authentic voice, as you are not influenced by institutional norms. Negatives: · Lack of Structure: Without a formal curriculum, it can be challenging to develop a comprehensive skill set. · Limited Feedback: You may have fewer opportunities for critique and feedback, which can hinder your growth. · Isolation: Self-teaching can be isolating, lacking the community and networking opportunities of formal education. · Self-Doubt: Without external validation, you may struggle with self-doubt and confidence in your abilities. Ultimately, the choice between formal art education and self-teaching depends on your individual circumstances, goals, and learning preferences. Some artists thrive in the structured environment of art school, while others prefer the freedom and autonomy of self-teaching.
