How to Boost your LinkedIn Profile, with the help of our volunteer Mathias Sauermann from We code IT Academy
🤔 When did I first think about doing unpaid volunteer work alongside my main job? The wish has accompanied me for years. What caused it to fail again and again? Simply for time reasons: I love my main job and want to give it my all. Accordingly, my free time is sacred to me so that I can recharge the battery. 🔥 My motivation to do volunteer work remained: Over the last few years, I have gradually become aware that white men like me are hardly or not at all aware of their implicit privileges based on the social disadvantage of other groups (the book "Deutschland Schwarz Weiß" by Noah Sow had the strongest impact on me in this regard). This creates a responsibility for people like me to support and empower disadvantaged and discriminated people. 🕒 It is up to us how we use the time we are given in this life. If I can contribute even a fraction of a nanogram to making things a little more fair, I will do that. As simple as that. 💻 Voluntary positions that I researched often sounded rigid in terms of timing and not very flexible in terms of where they were carried out. Unfortunately, I was no longer able to carry out my previous voluntary position as a language mentor for logistical reasons. But as always: If you do your research, you will find options. That's exactly what I did and came across the great Nuremberg initiative "We code IT Academy" from the association we integrate e.V. Nürnberg. Here I can help people with refugee and migrant backgrounds in Germany find professional access to the IT sector. And all of this with completely free scheduling of time and location. 📊 In times of increasing shortage of skilled workers, this is not only a human purpose but also an economic purpose. My first to-do in my new volunteer position is to help IT-savvy people with refugee and migrant backgrounds to make the best possible use of our favorite B2B platform. I look forward to it. 💪

🌍 Unlocking Volunteer Potential Across Europe! While Northwest Europe may be the sweet spot for volunteerism, it’s essential to remember that great volunteers can be found across the continent. Understanding what motivates individuals to volunteer is key to tapping into this potential. According to the 2021 EESC study, these are the primary motivations for volunteering in Europe: 🔹 Values: Alignment with personal values, especially relevant for political organizations. 🔹 Career: Networking opportunities that assist in landing the next job or business venture. 🔹 Social: Building and maintaining social networks. 🔹 Enhancement and Protective Functions: Developing leadership skills beneficial for career growth. Interestingly, altruism - often a central argument in the U.S. - is notably absent from this list. This suggests that "what’s in it for me" messaging, focusing less on altruism, may resonate more with European volunteers. So, forget the "giving back" pitch—European volunteers are motivated differently! Understanding these motivations can help organizations across Europe tailor their volunteer recruitment and engagement strategies more effectively. How are you tailoring your volunteer recruitment messages for a European audience? #Volunteering #CommunityEngagement #VolunteerMotivation #EuropeVolunteers

Why Canadian 🇨🇦 Employers Value Volunteer Experience on Your Resume Volunteering is deeply rooted in Canadian culture, and employers often consider volunteer work a crucial indicator of a candidate’s leadership, initiative, and commitment to the community. Whether leading a local non-profit event, helping with environmental causes, or supporting charitable organizations, your volunteer work can demonstrate valuable soft skills. Why volunteer experience matters in Canada: ✅ Demonstrates Leadership: Leading a team or project as a volunteer shows initiative and the ability to manage others. ✅ Shows Community Involvement: Employers value candidates who give back to their communities, as it reflects social responsibility. ✅ Develops Transferable Skills: Volunteering helps build communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills—skills that apply to any job. ✅ Bridges Gaps in Employment: Volunteering is a great way to stay engaged and showcase continued growth if you’ve been out of work. ✅ Shows Passion and Commitment: Volunteering highlights your dedication to causes outside of just your career development. When listing volunteer work on your resume, treat it like a paid job—focus on specific achievements and measurable outcomes. Be sure to highlight it on your resume! #resumewriting #volunteeringexperience #volunteerwork #canadaculture

Founding and scaling GearUp has taught me a lot about managing people. If you think retaining paid employees is tough, try managing volunteers. The passion of volunteers must more than compensate to keep them involved, even in tough times. I have learned with my team that there are three key ingredients to a successful volunteer: passion, skill, and discipline. A passionate person without skill will get nothing done well; they will only engage in exciting discussions. A skillful person without discipline will not be able to carve out time from busy schedules to do the unpaid work they are passionate about. We have only seen success with people who possess all three qualities. Yet, it is still difficult to adequately assess these traits until volunteers begin the work themselves. So once again, we are calling for volunteers. If you have all the above and more, and you are interested in being a part of GearUp - join us!
