Many managers think first of technical skills when considering employee training, which is fine. . . But, leadership development is beyond that. Yes, you may need to send Samantha to an Excel class so she can learn to make pivot tables. But to really get long-term value out of Samantha, you need her to develop into an organizational leader. Training is a collective responsibility 🚀 It's pretty common to view training as the responsibility of HR or L&D teams, but this is one reason why so much training fails to have impact. When trainees return to the workplace and try to use what they have learned, there are (formal and informal) barriers and deterrents in the way. That's why taking a 'whole-organisation' approach to training and development is key to success. Last week I posted about the good news of more organisations recruiting for internal roles that have a specific focus on leadership and management development. Research in the last year, on behalf of the CMI and shared by CIPD, found that: 1. 82% of new managers 2. 26% of Senior Managers 3. 52% of line managers... ...had no formal leadership and management training!! Just imagine the costs (as exemplified by 33% of leavers) that result in terms of grievances, poor performance, conflict and rehiring to name but a few. I have trained and coached hundreds of managers engaging in their own development for the first time. Unrealised potential is discovered, better practice evolves and ultimately leaders 'making a positive difference' is the key goal. Leadership and management training is an investment not a cost! #leadership #performance
