Do you recognize any of these units? Department of Cyberspace Studies -- (AFIT/EXC) recently graduated 62 students from U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology's updated Joint Intermediate Cyberspace Operations course (Cyberspace 200) class FY24D. Led by the Cyberspace 200 Course Chief Captain Charles Dana, this was the inaugural class for the first major overhaul of Cyberspace 200 in six years. One way we remember our students and honor their accomplishments and contributions to the United States Department of the Air Force and the United States Department of Defense missions, is to allow them to add their unit patch to our heritage boards. A few of those patches from class FY24D are shown here. 🎯 Cyberspace 200 Purpose Statement: To develop warfighter communications and cyberspace effects officers by enhancing their operational mindset to plan, operate, and execute capabilities across full spectrum operations and joint multi-domain environments securing the competitive advantage over our nation's adversaries. 🎯 Cyberspace 200 Course Objectives: • Organizational Understanding: Understand the full spectrum of communications and cyberspace organizations, operations, and core competencies. • Planning and Integration: Apply military planning processes and critical thinking skills to integrate communications and cyberspace capabilities to achieve mission objectives. • Conceptual Knowledge: Understand key concepts regarding communications and cyberspace, doctrine, strategy, policy, and professional development opportunities. 🎯 Cyberspace 200 Focus Areas: • Capabilities: Explain communications and cyberspace capabilities, including their functionalities, applications, and implications for joint multi-domain operations. • OT&E: Differentiate roles and responsibilities of DoD organizations and how they related to communications and cyberspace operations. • Operations Environment: Explain the evolving nature of cyberspace, information warfare, and the digital and operational environment. • Planning: Develop an operational design and plan that incorporates communications and cyberspace capabilities and resilience within a joint multi-domain environment. • Enrichment: Demonstrate an understanding of relevant communications and cyberspace topics that extend beyond individual areas of expertise. Being a career Airman in a Cyber/IT career field, it's challenging to feel compelled to pursue higher education or certifications and seemingly is only a differentiator for promotion. I've attempted on three separate occasions to make progress towards a BS, but ultimately lost steam due to Gen Ed requirements and not actually learning things associated with my Major. I'm happy to say that I've gotten back on the horse now that I've found a school and a degree program I value! I've been apprehensive to join Western Governor's University because the school seemed too good to be true, but I now understand the hype. WGU utilizes the competency model of learning and objective mastery, which allows for someone with previous experience to accelerate their degree. In the IT-related programs, they interleave professional foundational certifications from CompTIA, ITIL, LPI, and PMI so it feels like you're earning more value out of the degree. So why am I doing this now if I haven't felt the burden to pursue higher ed or certs before? Well, I got the wake up call that I've been missing an opportunity to qualify my experience and truly represent my expertise. Having experience in networking, systems administration, project management, RF transmission systems, cybersecurity, and contingency planning mean little beyond the annual performance report. I've valued myself as a technical leader but in submitting my application to be considered for Air Force Warrant Officer selection, I realize that performance reports primarily sell how well you managed people and programs rather than attesting to technical acumen. With the advent of the USAF Warrant Officer, the Cyber/IT Airmen now have incentive to focus on their technical development! Many Airmen want to continue serving in the military, though the prospect of separating for a high-paying wage was more enticing. I recognize we're in this first year of determining how/what to utilize WOs but as it matures, my hopes is we collectively see growth in the capabilities of our Airmen pursuant to their eventual bid for WO consideration.

The outstanding success of NPS students is the driving force behind our organization. We take immense pride at the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation & Alumni Association, in our students’ achievements and their exceptional impact on #nationalsecurity and military operations. In this month's Faces of NPS: Information & Communication Technologies for Operational Readiness, we had the opportunity to showcase one of our U.S. Navy Submarine Warfare Officers in Training, Ens. Olivia "Ollie" Shapiro. Their research focuses on thermal imaging of operations on an Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems Solid State Drive. "My research aims to use the non-invasive technique of the thermal side channel to associate thermal imaging patterns with operations on an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS)… The next step in this research is to detect SSD failure and when there is malware on the ECDIS. This research can be expanded to any system that uses an SSD, whether in operational platforms or data centers, and will be used to secure military systems further." The potential impact of Shapiro's research is significant, offering a pathway towards enhanced security and operational readiness for submarine officers and the broader Department of Defense community. Through the detection of SSD failure and malware presence on critical systems like the Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems, this research has the potential to ensure smoother operations and greater resilience against cyber threats. Naval Postgraduate School students like Shapiro are trail-blazing new ideas and create innovation that continue to make #NPS a leader in educational advancement. Read Shapiro's full interview for more about their research and how the education received at NPS will impact future operational experiences. https://ow.ly/Ycos50QJlOx #FacesofNPS #NPSFoundation #USNavy #SubmarineWarfare #NPSstudent #ICT

James Oxford - #Congratulations on this important milestone! I, and many others, are anxiously awaiting the impending release of our Masters thesis. I look forward to learning from the insights you were able to glean through your scholarly endeavors. Also, kudos to LinkedIn (and Grammarly) for generating this excellent sidebar description of NCDU CIC "The College of Information and Cyberspace at National Defense University focuses on educating joint warfighters, national security leaders, and the cyber workforce on the cyber domain and information environment. Through its programs, including the Warfighting and Disruptive Technologies course, it aims to advance national and global security."
I’ve been trying to wait until it’s official, but I’m about to burst! 📝My thesis on Cyber Foreign Internal Defense is written! 📚My classes are done! 🎯I’ve got a couple capstone exercises to participate in and a short 500-750 word memo to write! 🚇There’s finally light at the end of the tunnel! I will graduate next month with a new Masters degree from the College of Information and Cyberspace, National Defense University.
