As kitten season begins, you might see a few articles highlighting the crisis. Unfortunately, I've stopped responding to most media inquiries about this topic, because writers are not asking the real questions: This happens every year - why aren't we prepared? Why have animal shelters been overcrowded for decades? Why aren't cities funding proven, upstream solutions like increased access to affordable veterinary care? Grant funding for spay/neuter is almost nonexistent. What should the largest animal welfare organizations be doing to address this crisis? I've had other writers who did ask these questions come back later to say their editor cut the details to keep things high level. And I can't really blame the media orgs - they are dealing with their own fight for survival. There are only a few left who could cover this if they wanted to. Since no one else is giving this story the attention it deserves, we will cover it ourselves on the ground. For now, my interview with Brian Lehrer remains a great deep dive. I'm so grateful he took the time to ask the right questions. https://lnkd.in/e-ZPFwzf

In the heartwarming scene of a child riding a baby animal, we glimpse innocence and wonder. But beneath the surface lies a critical question: Is this interaction truly harmless? Let’s explore the fine line between joy and responsibility. Picture it: a child perched atop a gentle creature, their eyes wide with delight. The visual is vivid—a snapshot of innocence and curiosity. Yet, as we marvel at this heartwarming moment, we must also consider the hidden complexities. The Innocence of Youth Children, in their unbridled innocence, often lack awareness of the consequences of their actions. Their joy knows no bounds, and their interactions with animals are fueled by wonder and curiosity. But what about the animals themselves? Beneath the smiles lies a darker truth. The weight of a child on a baby animal’s back can cause physical strain, stress, and even injury. What seems like innocent play may, in fact, be a form of abuse. As responsible adults, we must tread carefully. As stewards of the natural world, we carry a responsibility—to protect both children and animals. Our duty extends beyond capturing charming moments for social media. It involves educating ourselves and others about the impact of our actions. Let us celebrate innocence while respecting the well-being of all creatures. By doing so, we honor the delicate balance between joy and responsibility in child-animal interactions. #AnimalsAreNotForOurEntertainment #ResponsibleInteractions #InnocenceAndAwareness

Have you ever seen a service dog with its handler and wished you could take your dog everywhere with you too? Seems like a wonderful idea for all you dog lovers out there, right? Well... there is a difference between desiring to have your dog with you at all times and legitimately needing your service dog to help you with serious health issues, mobility issues, & navigating society with mental health conditions. Those dogs you see... They are highly trained and are providing a very specialized and incredibly important service. Or are they? In this episode, we tackle the prevalent and very controversial problem with Fake Service Dogs. We discuss the uprising of scammers, grifters, and people who selfishly try to work "the system" for their own benefit, at the expense of those who legitimately need the help and support of these specialized dogs. We also dive into the legalities and laws (or lack thereof) that have been put in place to try to protect legitimate handlers and their service dogs.
