Why In-Person Care Still Matters in the Era of Telehealth: A Deep Dive into Hybrid Models In a world where telehealth surged from 1% to 17% of medical appointments post-COVID-19, you’d think the future of healthcare is fully virtual. But startups like knownwell and Millie are betting on a hybrid model—combining the convenience of virtual visits with the essential touchpoints of in-person care. At the heart of these models is the belief that healthcare isn’t one-size-fits-all. For knownwell, co-founders Brooke Boyarsky Pratt and Angela Fitch saw the need for a personalized, weight-inclusive approach to patient care. Their decision to prioritize in-person interactions—like physical exams and weight distribution assessments—fosters deeper, more meaningful relationships between patients and clinicians. In fact, patient satisfaction is consistently higher in face-to-face visits, reaching nearly 94%. Similarly, Millie has taken a “modern approach to holistic maternity care,” offering a blend of virtual, clinic-based, and even at-home appointments. This hybrid strategy ensures comprehensive support throughout pregnancy and postpartum, making healthcare more accessible and affordable without sacrificing quality. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, it’s clear that while telehealth offers convenience, in-person care remains a cornerstone for building lasting patient relationships, ensuring accurate assessments, and maintaining high patient satisfaction. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ed43kC3b #HealthcareInnovation #HybridCare #PatientExperience #ClinicalResearch #Telemedicine #PrimaryCare #WeightInclusiveHealthcare #MaternityCare #HealthcareEntrepreneurship #DigitalHealth

Recent research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine reveals a remarkable shift in Veteran care: video-based telehealth has experienced a staggering 2,300% increase, now accounting for 11-12% of outpatient care. This transition highlights the collaborative efforts between nurse practitioners and #DigitalVA, showcasing the invaluable role of telehealth in providing essential care to Veterans and their families, especially those with limited access to Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMCs). Thanks to secure video connections, mobile appointment-scheduling apps, and other accessible digital solutions, telehealth has become a critical lifeline, ensuring that preventive and essential care is accessible to Veterans, demonstrating a powerful example of human-centered technology. https://lnkd.in/gzHkTamM #Telehealth #veteranshealth

New work with Kosali Simon and Emily Hayden out now in Telemedicine Reports: "Health Care Visit Modality Among Older Adults: Telehealth and Subsequent Emergency Department Use" https://lnkd.in/gAA7WcHT We look at problem-oriented outpatient claims and subsequent emergency department use by age, finding positive association between telehealth use at the outpatient level and subsequent ED visit likelihood with increasing magnitude by age in the last year of our sample (2021). Alongside the call for causal research designs, we discuss limits of comparing telehealth and in-person care at scale. One key issue is the lack of data on patient comfort & care goals, which makes it hard to evaluate quality of care differences, especially for older patients! Increased telehealth use in our health care systems in a post-2020 world necessitates a whole host of policy-relevant questions I think we are all just beginning to find out the answers to. Looking forward to where this line of literature takes us!

𝗖𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘅! 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵. The House Energy and Commerce Committee heard poignant and direct patient testimony regarding telehealth's critical role in managing chronic conditions which set the stage for conversation about the future of telehealth, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing aimed to support 15 legislative proposals backing telehealth access, with bipartisan support emphasizing its benefits. The Congressional conversation has ardent support coupled with some realistic concerns. The critical role of telehealth in modern healthcare delivery cannot be overstated. It is indispensable in the management of chronic conditions, as it preserves patient autonomy in choosing care modality (imperative). Though there are nuanced hurdles that must be addressed, Congress must continue to prioritize policies that safeguard access to high quality care, preserve patient autonomy, address reimbursement and licensure challenges, and promote health equity. Failing to act decisively could pose significant setbacks for patients reliant on telehealth services for their care. Bottom line? Looks like telehealth is here to stay with some needed usage and regulatory guardrails. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Vaidya, A. (2024, April 12).
