Milestone Achieved: Wrapping Up My Master's Dissertation! 📚 Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is an escalating global crisis, with the WHO warning it could lead to 10 million deaths annually by 2050 if not addressed. The potential impact is staggering, making AMR one of the most critical issues of our time. As part of my Master's dissertation at the University of Leeds, I had the privilege of contributing to this vital field. My work involved isolating antibiotic-producing bacteria and bacteriophages, gaining hands-on experience in DNA extraction, and using the Oxford Nanopore MinION technology to sequence these samples. I employed the Galaxy platform for comprehensive bioinformatic analysis of the sequence data, enabling me to interpret the genetic sequences and extract valuable insights. This project has been a transformative learning experience. It equipped me with a diverse skill set, including advanced laboratory techniques, data analysis, and the ability to distill complex scientific information into clear, actionable insights. These skills are crucial not only for advancing research but also for effectively communicating findings to a broader audience. Working under the guidance of Chris Randall and Matt Bawn, and the invaluable support from lab managers Grace Charlotte Roberts FHEA and Barry Causier, alongside a great team—Abbygail Chan, Faizaan Noyda, Ambe B, Rahul Biswas, Sakshi Singh, Shae Tang, Lagna Ghatak, and sneha Chowdary —has made this journey truly rewarding. Dear Biozeephysisian, I think the field of #molecular_biology has really evolved over time, moving away from just looking at #metabolic pathways to focusing more on #genetic information and how #genes are expressed. This shift happened because of several breakthroughs, like discovering the structure of #DNA, learning how genes are regulated, and developing DNA sequencing techniques. These advances have paved the way for amazing developments in #genetic_engineering and #personalized_medicine. We’re now able to understand diseases at a much deeper, molecular level, which is pretty incredible. I am feeling grateful to share that I have completed a 3 day workshop entitled "NGS training on Oxford Nanopore Technologies". I take it as pride to be part of this insightful workshop based on theoretical and practical knowledge in real sense. I appreciate the dedication and efforts of the master trainer #DrShakeel who is an all-rounder in the field of Molecular biology, his excellent knowledge and how he engaged us throughout the session. I would also like to pay gratitude to all the participants from Lums, UVAS and ofcourse #CEMB to share their ideas. Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) revolutionizes genetic sequencing by providing real-time analysis, long read lengths, and portability. Its direct sequencing approach eliminates extensive sample preparation, and the ability to sequence single molecules enhances accuracy. ONT's versatility spans DNA, RNA, and proteins, making it applicable to diverse research areas. The technology's potential cost-effectiveness and innovative use of nanopores for real-time analysis further contribute to its appeal. 🔬 Exciting Insights from our Last Journal Club Session! Our PhD scholar, Shivashis, delivered a presentation on CDPK-driven calcium signaling in Toxoplasma gondii, centered around the article entitled “CDPK2A and CDPK1 Form a Signaling Module Upstream of Toxoplasma Motility” published in mBio by Professor SEBASTIAN LOURIDO group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The study focuses on TgCDPK2A, a canonical Calcium-Dependent Protein Kinase, detailing its role in parasite egress. It reveals an epistatic relationship with CDPK1, demonstrating their cooperative involvement in the Toxoplasma gondii lytic cycle. The integration of chemical, genetic, and genome engineering approaches not only makes this study informative for molecular parasitology enthusiasts but also opens a highly insightful avenue for research within and beyond the field.
