Have you checked out Accordant's insights on the recent Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for Year 2023? The data from this year’s report created mixed reactions. On one hand, we learned that all sources of giving in 2023 declined or remained flat when adjusted for inflation, despite $557.16 billion raised in total. On the other hand, five of the nine sub-sectors, including health ($56.58 billion), reached an all-time high even when adjusted for inflation. In a nutshell, this is what we learned: Giving dropped again—by individuals, by foundations and by corporations. Giving dropped across the board. The news is discouraging, so how do we move forward from here? Read more: https://ow.ly/SVpr50SqGXH #healthcare #philanthropy

Charitable giving presents a significant mission opportunity. Charitable giving in the United States measured $499.33 billion in 2022.* While giving at this level indicates extraordinary generosity to charitable causes, this represents a 3.4% decrease in current dollars and a 10.5% decrease in inflation-adjusted dollars over the prior year; a reality largely attributed to challenging economic conditions including historic inflation, stock market volatility and decreased consumer discretionary income.* However, dollars given to health causes—including not only hospitals and health systems but also health research and advocacy organizations—enjoyed a year-over-year increase of 5.1% which equates to 10% of total U.S. giving or $51.8 billion.* Health organizations also have a rising opportunity to secure a larger piece of the giving pie as they increasingly reach beyond hospital walls to address social drivers of health and health equity, which creates opportunities to tap into dollars given to human services ($71.98 billion) and public-society benefit ($46.86 billion).* Check out the full piece by Accordant CEO Betsy Chapin Taylor, FAHP, on the financial rationale for health philanthropy this year: https://ow.ly/iAuz50RE8vA *Giving USA 2023: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2022 (2023) #healthcare #philanthropy

Did you know funding is, by far, the limiting factor to advance community health? There is a substantial need for philanthropy in this space. In a survey conducted by ReThink Health, 82% state that, “Not enough funding for our services, programs or policies,” is a barrier contributing to equitable community well-being.* To meet the financial challenge faced by health care organizations, health care foundations are leaning in and incorporating health equity in their philanthropic case for support. For many organizations, designing a health equity case requires a fresh approach beyond the traditional capital and/or specialty care projects. This is so true! It’s imperative that organizations approach diversifying their fundraising revenue through a thoughtful/strategic planned giving program, not a reactive program. Too many times fundraisers jump directly into tactics without creating a strategic plan, setting appropriate expectations with leadership and getting buy-in. This is exactly why we created the National Standards for Gift Planning Success at the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners. These standards were created to be agnostic of the size, type and complexity of NPO, so that every program can be built around critical fundamentals. https://lnkd.in/ezZefNc
Health care organizations who wish to build a planned giving program often take a huge misstep when they begin, prompting initial thoughts and questions such as: “Hey, I need a brochure. Who should I talk to about a website?” Or, “Some of our board members think we need to ask for planned gifts. Let’s do a mailing." Taking this Band-Aid approach isn’t how to build a program. Rather, it’s about building a culture—one that requires a team effort where all members of the philanthropy team are involved, from the back office to the front line. Yet, many organizations view starting a planned giving program as an effort only a subject matter expert can handle. Although there is some truth to this regarding specific aspects of sophisticated planned giving methods/vehicles, it’s far from the overall truth. Check out this week's eNews for a piece from Accordant's James Gold on how organizations can start building a culture of planned giving that will yield long lasting results: https://ow.ly/bEhs50SKTm1 #healthcare #philanthropy #plannedgiving #culture

In the complex world of health care philanthropy, simplicity and linear timelines are rare. With limited resources and budgets, some organizations shy away from focusing energy and resources around advancing a grateful engagement strategy while also trying to campaign, but this must be overcome. The benefits of employing a strategy that combines campaigning and grateful engagement in a coordinated approach can lead to remarkable success in supporting the community. By launching wave campaigns and investing in grateful engagement at the same time, we create a catalyst for philanthropy that surpasses what either strategy can achieve alone. Learn more about health care philanthropy's secret strategy in this piece by Accordant's Erin M. Stitzel, FAHP, and Heather Wiley Starankovic, CFRE, CAP: https://ow.ly/7ybS50ThiiG #healthcare #philanthropy #gratefulengagement #campaigns #strategy

The old ABCs of fundraising were to “Always Be Closing” a gift no matter the size or area of impact. However, emphasis on the dollar instead of the donor or the mission is not philanthropy, and this old way of thinking obstructs our shared opportunity to transform health care philanthropy. Now is the time to view opportunities beyond transactional fundraising. Now is the time to embrace being a health care executive and align funding priorities with hospital strategic plans that are focused, flexible and shorter in length—to pivot toward a donor-centered model that leads to accelerated gift closures. Finally, a linchpin of driving high performance is to look beyond the old ways of campaigning and to consider the new ABCs of health care philanthropy: “Always Be Campaigning.” Read more about the new ABCs of health care philanthropy from Accordant's Heather Wiley Starankovic, CFRE, CAP: https://ow.ly/gSot50ReLZJ #healthcare #philanthropy #campaign #strategy

Campaigns are a valuable lever to accelerate successful health care philanthropy programs. Many successful programs are in “constant campaign,” either planning, conducting or wrapping up a campaign at any given time. Campaigns represent a high ROI development activity which can buoy an organization’s fiscal capacity in today’s fluid health care financial environment. However, many leaders aren’t sure where to start when it comes to campaigns. They often ask: “How do we know if we are ready to start a campaign?” or “What does an organization need to have in place to plan and execute a successful campaign?” Here's a checklist from Accordant's Heather Wiley Starankovic, CFRE, CAP, to help you get campaign ready: https://ow.ly/Ka9z50Qu6pJ #healthcare #philanthropy #campaign
