Reflection is Vital for Thriving I spent a few days in Barcelona last week working with 36 judges from almost every corner of Europe. I am always impressed when judges attend our bi-annual development sessions because they listen to relatively complex ideas over two days, delivered in a language that is not their native tongue. However, what else strikes me is that regardless of our home country or the job we do, we all have a very similar human experience. One of my sessions focussed on mental resilience and those strategies that can be applied by the judge to maintain calm and focus in the highly pressured environment of a court hearing. Part of the lesson is to reflect on the harm we do when we haven’t been our best self or made our wisest decisions. We are all vulnerable to being triggered and reacting in ways that are not helpful in high octane situations. That the judges can recognise their own vulnerability (as well as that of the litigants) and fallability is an important first step. I have had the privilege of training hundreds of judges in the past 10 years, both in the UK and Europe, and every single one of them has struck me as highly committed to doing the best they can in delivering justice, regardless of the many challenges that arise in the eye of the litigation storm. That commitment extends to them being honest about their flaws and seeking to adopt helpful new habits that deliver procedural and substantive justice, every time. One of the most heartening aspects of the course are the small group discussions where the judges reflect on when they have not been at their wisest or most resilient, leading to difficult outcomes for others as well as for themselves. Regular reflection is an important habit, because only by working through difficult experiences and asking what we could have done differently can we plan how to show up in a better mindset and heartset on the next occasion. Spend 3 minutes and write those sentences that describe a beautiful ideal picture of any area or project. Use this journaling process to create your vision or beautiful picture for projects and your family, work, money, faith, physical health, and learning areas of life.
