🌟 Exciting Milestone! 🌟 I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my first book chapter, titled "Oxidative Stress in Preeclampsia and Preterm Newborns" in the book "Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress" (Springer Nature). This work explores the intricate role of oxidative stress in preeclampsia, a challenging syndrome affecting both mother and fetus, and delves into its impact on the health of preterm newborns. Abstract Oxidative stress, caused by an imbalance between reactive species and antioxidants, is key in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, and other complications, preeclampsia stems largely from placental oxidative stress, which is exacerbated by inadequate vascular remodeling and ischemia-reperfusion injury. For newborns, oxidative stress contributes to conditions like necrotizing enterocolitis and retinopathy of prematurity, impacting vital organ development. Special thanks to my collaborators at the Center for Biophysics and Biochemistry (Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research, Venezuela), the Cellular Signaling and Differentiation Laboratory (Universidad San Sebastián, Chile), and the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology (Charles University, Czech Republic) for making this research possible. #Research #OxidativeStress #Preeclampsia #NewbornHealth #Collaboration #BookChapter You can read more here:

Here are some simple notes for reticulocytes. These are polychromatic (polychromatophilic) erythrocytes, newly released from the RBC production. Polychromatic erythrocytes are closely observed because they indicate the ability of the bone marrow to increase RBC production in anemia caused by blood loss or excessive RBC destruction. Methylene blue dyes, called nucleic acid stains or vital stains, are used to differentiate and count these young RBCs. Vital (or “supra-vital”) stains are dyes absorbed by live cells. Young RBCs contain ribonucleic acid (RNA) and are called reticulocytes when the RNA is visualized using vital stains. Counting reticulocytes visually by microscopy was a tedious and imprecise procedure until the development of automated reticulocyte counting by the TOA Corporation in 1991. Now all fully automated blood cell analyzers provide a relative reticulocyte percentage, an absolute reticulocyte count, and, in addition, an especially sensitive measure of RBC production, the immature reticulocyte fraction. However, it is still necessary to confirm automated analyzer counts visually from time to time, so medical laboratory professionals must retain this skill. #laboratory #hematology #labprofessional #MLSASCP #IVD

"Recently, I conducted a detailed examination of human cheek cells using a microscope. The cells were observed to be relatively flat with an irregular shape. The cell membrane was clearly visible, as was the nucleus, which was centrally located. This observation offered a clear view of the fundamental cellular structures, illustrating the practical aspects of cellular morphology and the importance of microscopy in biological research. Such experiences are crucial for understanding cell organization and function in microbiology. #Microbiology #CellBiology #Microscopy #LabResearch"

External quality assessment programs (EQAPs) should comprehensively evaluate both analytical and post-analytical components of laboratory performance in order to harmonise reporting and to support the accurate interpretation of molecular haematology tests. This is one of the findings of a study published in the June issue of Pathology journal which evaluated a national sample exchange program for molecular haematology testing. The longitudinal data collected over four years found that, while inter-laboratory concordance for molecular haematology testing was high in the analytical phase, there were opportunities for improvement in the post-analytical phase to ensure the generation of clear, consistent clinical reports that inform patient care. HPLC separates hemoglobin types based on their retention times as they pass through the chromatographic column. Different hemoglobin variants have unique interactions with the stationary phase, allowing for precise identification. Purpose of the Test: Diagnosis: Detect abnormal hemoglobin variants (e.g., HbS, HbC, HbE). Monitoring: Evaluate the severity of conditions like sickle cell disease or thalassemia. Screening: Assess carriers or affected individuals in high-risk populations. #biomedical_engineering #royal_hospital #BME #troubleshooting #HPLC_analyser #lab #hematology #calibration#PPM
