In my quest to find out why biotech/pharma hiring practices are inefficient, I stumbled across an unexpected reason: head count. If Biotech X has $500K to spend on R&D payroll each year but the head count has been capped at two people, then it can make only two hires. But if the goal is to build the most productive team of scientists, why not allow the flexibility to hire as many scientists as is reasonable, while staying well within the $500K budget? Is it because head count is just an easier way to think about a company's burn rate? #biotech #pharma #jobsearch #hiring #headcount
