As wildfire season gets underway across the West, the lessons of the devastating blazes of 2020 continue to reverberate in rural Oregon. The Community Rebuilding Fund was a collaboration of OCF, The Ford Family Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust and the American Red Crosss. It raised $10.8 million for community-led efforts to make fire-devastated areas stronger over the long term and more resilient to disasters. OCF donors stepped up to give generously. Those dollars have now been fully distributed. Yet, the fund’s impact lives on: In local nonprofits more equipped to help their neighbors. In a historic level of collaboration, community violence intervention (CVI) groups, philanthropic organizations, business leaders, and government entities recently unveiled an initiative to expand CVI programs over the next decade to significantly reduce gun violence in Chicago. The goal of the initiative, called Scaling Community Violence Intervention for a Safer Chicago, or "SC2," is to reduce shootings and homicides by half within five years and by 75 percent in a decade. And when it comes to community ownership of real estate, smaller buildings are key.” The Foreclosure Intervention Housing Preservation Program (#FIHPP) is KEY to preserving buildings like these, but it’s on the chopping block in state budget negotiations. Great things are happening here

After a rigorous application and selection process, Carpe Diem Arts has been successfully chosen to be a partner organization of Spur Local, formerly known as Catalogue for Philanthropy. Spur Local says, "All nonprofit partners are chosen by residents who live or work in the Greater Washington region. As part of our annual review process, these 170+ volunteers look beyond the traditional metrics of evaluation and address questions that people don’t always think to ask or have the time to assess. What need is a nonprofit meeting? Are its finances sound? What impact does it make on our local communities, and how does it involve communities in their work? Through this democratic decision-making process, we then determine the critical local nonprofits that join our network, and enter a four-year partnership with us."

The deadline to submit applications for Oconomowoc Area Foundation's 2024 grant cycle is quickly approaching! The foundation makes grants to nonprofits that serve communities within the Oconomowoc Area School District, including the towns of Ashippun, Ixonia, Okauchee, Summit, Dousman and Nashotah. The nonprofit does not have to be physically located within the greater Oconomowoc area, but it must demonstrate it provides services to the residents of these communities. Its funding priorities are the following: ✨Programs for children and youth ✨Programs providing support services for the elderly. ✨Programs providing support services for people facing undue hardship or life-threatening conditions. ✨Programs that preserve and protect the environment and wildlife. ✨Programs that enrich the community through economic, cultural, and arts development.

Did you know that this month is American Red Cross Month?⛑️ It's important to recognize the vital role that the organization plays in supporting communities across the country. One of the most critical areas of focus for the Red Cross is home fire prevention and relief. Every year, thousands of families are impacted by devastating home fires, and the Red Cross is there to provide support and assistance in the aftermath. As one of their Safety Campaigns, the Red Cross works to educate families on fire safety and prevention. In addition, they offer resources and support to help families get back on their feet after a fire, including temporary shelter, food, and clothing. This month, let’s take a moment to recognize the incredible work that the American Red Cross does to keep our communities safe.
