Here are some of my take aways: 😎 Enhancing our joint operational capabilities is not just a necessity but a mandate for future success. 😎 The need for joint billets and training exercises that simulate real-world joint operations is stressed, allowing personnel to gain hands-on experience and develop the necessary skills to operate effectively within joint teams. 😎 Ensuring that IT systems are integrated and capable of supporting joint operations is critical for maintaining operational efficiency and effectiveness. Very practical advice on scaling innovation across the DoD. I agree with the 6 required factors described in the article. That said, factor 5 (steady funding) and factor 6 (senior leader support that ensures success and breaks bureaucratic logjams by providing rapid direction, streamlining processes, and creating an overarching, supporting culture of risk-taking) are the hardest. The other stuff is really not that hard. Jack Shanahan is spot on that "finding the right combination of disrupters, broken glass sweepers, and people who know how the to work the bureaucracy" is key. Robert 🦄 Slaughter and I talked about this on the Defense Unicorns podcast a while back -- Rob asked what my advice to leaders was for encouraging innovation and I replied "Find the innovators, protect them, and get the hell out of the way". The "protect them" part is about sweeping up the broken glass they'll inevitably create and also clearing obstacles (know how to work the bureaucracy). I really like the "broken glass sweeper" title -- I hadn't thought about it in those terms before but it's an apt description! #InnovateToWin #BreakSomeGlass

Agree with everything! These three authors, one of whom is the “patron saint of algorithmic warfare”, have the scars of experience—nothing theoretical here. All I can add is that alignment from top to bottom is even more important than just senior leader support. Critical that everyone shares the same vision, passion, and commitment to succeed. And a willingness to be held responsible and accountable. Plus finding the right combination of disrupters, broken glass sweepers, and people who know how the bureaucracy works and who know how to work the bureaucracy. Easy to say, but as these three leaders and doers know better than anyone, excruciatingly hard to do in the government.

What a day to have an interesting cafe seminar with Steven Hirshorn - Chief Engineering at NASA Headquarters to listen about his leadership tactics, dilemmas and problem solving. That's the best seminar so far, his sharing was like a bridge to close the gap between purely theory knowledge at university and what happens in reality, especially how he can handle struggles happening in an extremely complex working environment like aeronautic industry.

The Friday Few Observations for Week 18 of 2024 15 years ago, I interviewed an intelligence officer from the military for a non-profit role and as we were talking about his tour in Iraq he talked about their goal of a “frictionless transfer of information”. I just loved that phrase and we both chuckled how hard it is to achieve. In most human systems one of the obstacles is when power is involved, which it almost always is. You work for someone so there is power involved. You coach a team so there is power involved. You have an older sibling, at least one of you thinks there is power involved 😊 What if you were an enlisted man on a nuclear submarine in front of the captain? This power and the problem it presents in frictionless communication is exactly what Captain David Marquet addresses in the following Whiteboard Art video. https://lnkd.in/gK6ciT27 Captain Marquet realized that with almost 200 submariners in his care he needed to get the power out of the room and empower his people to communicate as freely as possible. If he didn’t, his one brain would be trying to outthink 200 brains which is really bad math. He accomplished this by changing the way everyone spoke up and down the chain of command. “I intend to” was the prefix for all actions. These three small words took Captain Marquet and his crew from one of the poorest performing submarines in the pacific to the top. As the book he wrote says, they “Turned This Ship Around”. We have a three-step process for helping companies turn their Groups into Teams and having a shared lingo for how everyone communicates who is going to do what by when is crucial. https://lnkd.in/gmxyhYVX Let us know if you need any help on this front.
