Dear LinkedIn Community, Today, I’d like to bring your attention to an important issue concerning our future accountants - the stipend for Chartered Accountant (CA) trainees in Pakistan, which currently stands at PKR 19,300. Let’s consider the financial reality these trainees face. The average cost of living for a single trainee in Pakistan is estimated at PKR 35,000 per month (Refer to the attachment below), covering necessities such as food, utilities, and education (excluding hostel expenses). Moreover, we cannot ignore the elephant in the room: inflation. This is why I am calling on relevant authorities, to review and increase the stipend for CA trainees. I also encourage my fellow CA trainees and other concerned individuals to raise awareness about this issue, be it through social media campaigns or any other source. #RaiseTheStipend #CATrainees #AccountancyInPakistan #FairStipend

I received a call today 🚨🚨 Every day, I receive messages from CA students sharing similar concerns: "Saboor bhai, I received a call from a firm offering me a position, but they mentioned placing me in the bookkeeping, accounting department or outsourcing department." What follows is often a feeling of frustration, with students asking, "Saboor bhai, this isn't the field I envisioned. My goal is to work in audit or tax/advisory—fields that align more closely with my career aspirations. Will this placement in bookkeeping help me get a job abroad, or should I be worried about my future prospects?" This concern is understandable. Many students enter the CA field with aspirations to specialize in audit or tax, seeing these areas as key to securing opportunities both in Pakistan and internationally. Being placed in bookkeeping, which may not align with their long-term goals, can feel like a step in the wrong direction. But this raises a deeper question: why do so many aspiring CAs feel compelled to leave Pakistan in the first place? Why is there a strong desire to secure jobs abroad, often at the cost of settling for roles that don’t match their career objectives? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Are we, as a community, focusing too much on moving abroad? And if so, how can we better align our early career steps, like firm placements, with our ultimate professional goals? #ca #acca #firms #culture #audit #tax #accounting #firmsbehaviour #pakistan #movingabroad #everyone #shareyourthoughts #helpeachother.

Here are my two cents on this There are several reasons behind this trend. Common motivations include: Better working environments: Many feel that international firms offer a more conducive atmosphere for growth, with structured career paths and support. Higher salaries: The financial allure of working abroad can be a major pull, with many countries offering compensation packages that far exceed what’s typically available in Pakistan. Broader opportunities: Some believe that the scope of work and exposure to global markets will open doors that might remain closed if they stay in Pakistan. However, it's important to distinguish between two separate issues: (1) the desire to work abroad and (2) the selection of departments during articles. For those considering working abroad, gaining experience in a variety of departments during articles can actually be beneficial. While it's true that articles in audit, particularly with a Big 4 firm, can offer a strategic advantage, it's equally important to recognize the value in other areas: Bookkeeping provides a strong foundation in the nuts and bolts of financial management, a skill set that is in demand globally. Taxation equips professionals with specialized knowledge that is critical for multinational operations. ERP and other systems are increasingly vital in today’s tech-driven financial landscape, making such experience highly marketable. The key takeaway? Don’t limit your vision. The goal should be to gain a well-rounded understanding of finance and accounting. Experience in different departments can broaden your expertise, making you a more versatile and valuable professional—whether you choose to stay in Pakistan or move abroad.
