Adam Neilson runs a people-intensive business in one of the most expensive housing markets in the world. So he’s had to come up with ways to mitigate that, and it’s arguably led to a competitive advantage in the talent market.
“Everywhere in North America, housing is a problem,” he says. “But it’s especially hard in Whistler, where homes are often five million dollars plus. You have all these international dollars feeding into this amazing place because people want to recreate here. But it means that there are fewer and fewer options for someone making twenty five, thirty, forty dollars an hour. And that makes staffing really challenging, because I’m in a people-heavy business. And every business here has the same challenge.”
“The positive side of being in Whistler is that there are hundreds, if not thousands of young people who wish to come here. It’s like the tides: there's always tons of new people coming and also people leaving. They come and be a ski instructor or ride their mountain bike. And if they can get a job where they can learn new skills, and work outside, and create beautiful things and get paid fairly – even if it's just for a year or two — then it's a win for them. But it just comes down to that housing equation and where they're going to live.”
“So I've come up with some ways to mitigate that, but it's really hard. For three or four years, Pika rented a house, and provided staff accommodation to five or six people. And then just this past January, the business purchased a house. Both houses are in Pemberton, which is 25 minutes north, and it's still very expensive, but the numbers work for both Pika and our staff living there.”

When I met Mike in 2011, he was behind the chair doing my hair. It wasn't long before he bought the building next door, then the Milk District location, and right now we are working on the #WinterGarden development Now, I hardly see Mike behind the chair at his salons as he's down to one (1) day a week.
Mike now spends his time growing his brand and looking for opportunities for expansion. Because he owns his real estate, it provides for a more frictionless experience as he doesn't have to worry about "losing the lease" due to rent hikes or otherwise. He's creating business cash flow AND building equity in his growing real estate portfolio.
Getting to work with entrepreneurs like Mike who have this #performancemindset brings me great JOY. I could think of no better person to kick off #successsaturday. The purpose of Success Saturday is to inspire entrepreneurs to reach their full potential.
