Should I Use Vagus Nerve Neurostimulation Devices? Neurostimulation devices are tools used in medical treatment, but their application requires careful consideration. While these devices are often promoted online for various conditions like POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) or concussion symptoms, they may not be suitable for everyone. It's crucial to accurately diagnose the underlying issue before using such devices. For instance, a vagus nerve stimulator might be inappropriate if the patient's symptoms are unrelated to vagus nerve function. Different types of neurostimulation devices are available, ranging from simple TENS units to more complex systems like the Neuro 20, which uses 20 electrodes to mimic various physical activities. These devices can be beneficial when applied correctly, such as helping patients with neuropathy regain walking ability. Do you ever look at the neurological assessment on your medical records and wonder how someone’s pupils can be exactly the same every time a provider assesses them? 😮 I do, too; typically, they are not. Pupil size changes quickly and frequently (they adjust in under 1/10th of a second to light entering the eye from different angles). But how do you objectively measure the diameter of a pupil? My really sick neuro patients need exact and accurate readings and trends, so we use a device called a pupillometer. We use the NeurOptics pupillometer, but I am sure there are a few other manufacturers out there. I love this thing!  It is especially helpful for my unstable brain injury patients. It gives me the pupil size, rounded to the hundredth of a millimeter. It also gives me other parameters (which are excellent indicators of changes in intracranial pressure) and a video of pupillary reaction side by side. I love it most because I can trend my pupillary reaction objectively, just like I trend any other vital sign. 📈 Have you ever used a pupillometer? MIRROR THERAPY: In mirror therapy (MT), a mirror is used to create a reflective illusion of an affected limb in order to trick the brain into thinking movement has occurred without pain, or to create positive visual feedback of a limb movement. It involves placing the affected limb behind a mirror. The mirror is positioned so the reflection of the opposing limb appears in place of the hidden limb. Clinicians can create this illusion with a mirror box. This device is simply a box with a mirror in the center allowing the hands to be placed on either side of the mirror. The affected limb is always covered while the unaffected limb is placed on the other side so its reflection can be seen on the mirror. > How mirror therapy works: The patient places the unaffected limb into one side, and the stump into the other. The patient then looks into the mirror on the side with unaffected limb and makes "mirror symmetric" movements, as a music conductor might, or as we do when we clap our hands. Because the subject is seeing the reflected image of the good hand moving, it appears as if the phantom limb is also moving. Rotator cuff tears are one of the most common injuries among the population, which result in plethora of innovations to this category of medical devices. About 1 in 5 people that have primary cuff repair (suture-tendon), have failed to fully recover. Although this is the case, there are lot of comorbidities that contribute to a repaired cuff finding success or not. Such as,   - Bone Quality - Smoker - Tendon Retraction - Age - High blood pressure   How are you treating these odds against rotator cuff repairs reaching a full success?   Studies show that acellular dermal allografts, have the potential to increase the strength of the repair by 60% while also increasing post-op healing rates.   Typically allografts are used in semi-large tears 3 cm or larger.
