Did you know: On average, women spend 25% more time in “poor health”? Healthcare access is less than half of the problem. The main reason is the gender gap in medical effectiveness. Men and women experience important differences in the effectiveness of medicines designed and approved for use by both. Often, women are at a disadvantage. For example, Asthma, which affects both men and women at a similar prevalence rate, is predominantly treated with inhaler therapy with bronchodilators and corticosteroids. However, studies indicate that this treatment is around 20 percentage points less effective for women than men. Unfortunately, there are several more such examples. Women are underrepresented in trials; only about 5% of trials report the number of participants by gender. Women’s health is under-invested and under-researched, e.g., there were five times more scientific studies on erectile dysfunction than premenstrual syndrome in 2015. Private investments in women’s health have increased recently, as the opportunity is becoming clearer. However, policy and incentive interventions are necessary to ensure gender-specific data tracking and higher investments in women’s health.

The current healthcare system tends to view the male body as “default,” which means women’s health needs are often dismissed, downplayed, or deprioritized. It's hard to believe this is the status quo in 2024, but here we are. In a recent guest column for Clinical Leader, Juan Camilo Arjona Ferreira, chief medical officer, Organon, argues that increasing women’s roles in clinical research is key to investment, engagement, and equity. Ferreira provides a three-step model designed to “drive forward important changes needed to advanced research in overlooked areas.” Here’s hoping that more biopharmas and medtechs will heed (and implement) this advice. Subgroup analysis is a statistical technique used in research and clinical trials to explore whether the effects of a treatment or intervention differ across different groups of subjects within a study population. Subgroups are defined based on certain characteristics or variables, and the goal is to examine whether the treatment effect is consistent across these subgroups or if there are variations in the response to the intervention. For example, whether treatment is more or less effective in women or treatment effectiveness is better or worse among older people. #ActuReal #WordofTheDay #Healthcare #SubgroupAnalysis
