Day 3 of being a Black Story Teller: The tricky thing about online advertising is... the guidelines can change on any platform at any time. Had I launched Resilient Spirits in 2021, I would have no problem getting my ads approved to reach Black-Owned Wine & Spirit brands and their supporters. Fast forward to today, elevating Black-Owned businesses isn't technically what's "hot in the streets" for these larger platforms and VCs are being sued for attempting to even the playing field for a "specific" demographic. The reaility is that Black business owners and Black entrepreneurs across the country STILL face many unique challenges, including systemic racism, a lack of access to venture capital funds, barriers to accessing support services and networking opportunities, and inequitable access to business education. Resilient Spirits was created in observance of these obstacles... hence the name. I'm observing and learning. It's very early in my journey and I'm still in high spirits. For now I will rely on my network to spread the word that Resilient Spirits is searching for brands interested in being included in the first ever platform showcasing the largest catalog of Black-Owned Wine&Spirits for FREE!!! I use to have a “Little Wins” dinner every Thursday with two of my friends. We’d go around the table celebrating our wins for the week — no matter how big or small. Because research shows that recognizing our achievements, even little ones, can boost: ✅ Mood ✅ Motivation ✅ Productivity ✅ Performance Sadly, these dinners stopped when we moved to different cities. But I still find ways to praise my progress. Here’s one way: 1.) Create a table with a column for: ☑ Date ☑ Achievement ☑ Opportunity (made available by the achievement) ☑ Metric(s) 2.) At the end of each week, write down 3 (or more) achievements 3.) Celebrate yourself! This method has helped me: ✅ Land corporate promotions ✅ Gain courage when experiencing self-doubt ✅ Recognize progress on my entrepreneurial journey ——— Our brains are designed to look for problems. That’s why we dwell on failures more than achievements. But don’t be so quick to discount your progress. Comment with a win you’re celebrating this week. Fawn Weaver launched Uncle Nearest whiskey in part to pay tribute to Nearest Green, a Black master distiller who taught Jack Daniels. Not only has Ms. Weaver revived and preserved Mr. Green's legacy, but she's built one of the fastest growing and most successful spirits companies - with a valuation approaching $1 billion. The #fortune article notes that just 0.48% of all venture dollars went to Black founders last year - that's about $661 million out of $136 billion! The incredible story of Au Vodka When I first heard of AU Vodka, all I knew of its founder Charlie Sloth was that he was once a Radio One DJ. I wrongly assumed he was “success by fame”. I should have known better than to judge a book by its cover. Charlie’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. At 24, Charlie was homeless, living in a shed with his girlfriend and baby.
