Did you know today, May 2, is National Truffle Day?
No, I'm not talking about icky mushrooms, I'm talking about the delicious dessert.
A dessert truffle is a type of confection that mimics the shape and, somewhat, the rough exterior of a real truffle fungus, but it is made from chocolate and other flavourings.
These sweet truffles are typically made from a mixture of melted chocolate, cream, and butter, which is known as ganache. This ganache is then cooled and formed into small, round balls, which are often coated in cocoa powder, chopped nuts, or chocolate shavings to resemble the earthy appearance of natural truffles.
Dessert truffles can come in a variety of flavours and finishes. Additional ingredients like liqueurs, fruit purees, spices, or extracts can be added to the ganache for different tastes, and coatings can vary widely to include things like powdered sugar, sprinkles, or even edible glitter. They are popular as luxurious treats for special occasions or as gifts.
I think I might make a trip to a Godiva Chocolatier shop and get some for myself.
Happy National Truffle Day everyone!
