Looking for the perfect incentives and rewards system will never work the way we think it will in a school-wide PBIS framework. Here’s why: PBIS should be about creating a culture where positive behavior is taught, modeled, and valued because it matters, not because there’s a prize attached. When we rely on rewards, we send the message that doing the right thing is transactional, and we risk undermining the relationships and intrinsic motivation that make PBIS work. Students don’t need more tokens or trinkets. They need clarity, consistency, and meaningful connections with the adults in their lives. What makes PBIS effective is a shared understanding of expectations, a commitment to recognizing students’ strengths, and a system that supports everyone in building a safe, respectful community. The search for the “perfect rewards system” misses the point. PBIS should be about people, not prizes.
