As I wrap up my first week at Quad, I can’t help but feel incredibly inspired by the experience so far. We've talked about NIMBY, we've talked about University Retirement Communities, and now to finish the trifecta, what the heck is YIGBY? Yes In God's Backyard ("YIGBY") is a movement combatting the housing shortage by utilizing the vast amounts of real estate connected to places of worship. There are about 400,000 churches in the United States. That is more locations than McDonalds, Subway, Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Wendy's, COMBINED...plus 100,000. And the reality is that many of these churches are abandoned or closed down making the highest and best use to be supplying housing units as part of its faith-filled mission. Keep your eyes peeled for churches with cranes! We'll see if this is a unique fad or becomes a widely adapted strategy.
