Some thoughts on the new economic reality in the US and abroad. The loyalty between employer and employee has thinned dramatically in the US compared to the last century. In this country a 2 year trade school degree has far more value than a 4 year degree. The single best thing anyone can do for their career or economic reality is to develop as many sets of skills as possible to become as self reliant as possible. Hopefully this becomes US education policy someday but the reality is anything and everything is available on Google and YouTube for free. Anyone who has been laid off which is more and more common understands your employer regards your employment as a non personal thing. So suit up and take care of the problems that immediately surround you first. Human Beings are more than a value assessment. Believe it to be true about yourself.

Some Sunday thoughts: If your employer offers tuition reimbursement for career development, use it! It's one of the most undervalued benefits. Continuous learning is something that will always benefit you and your long-term career. Definitely a perk that not many people use. Sometimes having that extra credential can set you apart from other candidates you're being compared with if the both of you have similar work experiences. Many institutions offer virtual classes to accommodate full-time employees.
