Imagine you're working on a farm, and you want to ensure your produce is safe from pesticide residues, particularly chlorpyrifos. Naomi (Xiaotong Liu) from my team led research on using tiny gold particles (AuNPs) to detect chlorpyrifos. Here's how it works: when AuNPs encounter chlorpyrifos, they clump together in small groups if there's a little of the pesticide and form larger clusters if there's a lot. This clustering creates a unique pattern detectable by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which can sense even tiny amounts of the residue. Naomi discovered that SERS signals were stronger at very low chlorpyrifos concentrations but became more complex and inversely related at higher levels. To improve detection accuracy, she combined several approaches: observing color changes in the AuNP solutions, analyzing how the particles absorbed light, and using principal component analysis. Additionally, Naomi developed a simple method to collect samples from cucumbers using acetonitrile swabs, which effectively detected low chlorpyrifos levels. This approach isn't limited to cucumbers and can be adapted for various foods, making it a versatile tool for ensuring food safety. Abstract: The human population will be approximately 9.7 billion by 2050, and food security has been identified as one of the key issues facing the global population. Agrochemicals are an important tool available to farmers that enable high crop yields and continued access to healthy foods, but the average new agrochemical active ingredient takes more than ten years, 350 million dollars, and 20,000 animals to develop and register. The time, monetary, and animal costs incentivize the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in early-stage screening to prioritize chemical candidates. This review outlines NAMs that are currently available or can be adapted for use in early-stage screening agrochemical programs. It covers new in vitro screens that are on the horizon in key areas of regulatory concern. Overall, early-stage screening with NAMs enables the prioritization of development for agrochemicals without human and environmental health concerns through a more directed, agile, and iterative development program before animal-based regulatory testing is even considered.

Plant biostimulants are regulated differently worldwide. The USDA defines biostimulants as substances that enhance natural plant processes independently of nutrient content, improving nutrient use efficiency, stress tolerance, and crop quality. Technology developers must register their plant biostimulant products based on composition and intended use. They can register as a fertilizer, soil amendment, beneficial substance, or inoculum at the state level. Alternatively, they can register as a plant regulator (i.e., pesticide) with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). State fertilizer regulations require minimal data, while EPA registration demands safety and composition information under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Although efficacy data submission is not always required, the EPA reserves the right to request it on a case-by-case basis.
