[PRESS RELEASE] European airports address the unprecedented and critical challenges facing the air transport sector, urging policymakers to adopt bold, forward-thinking approaches to secure the competitive and sustainable future of European aviation. Opening the ACI EUROPE’s Annual New Year reception, ACI EUROPE President and CEO of SEA Milan Airports Armando Brunini called for: ✈️ the EU to develop its own fully integrated testing and certification system for aviation security equipment ✈️ more EU support for the building of capacity and financing of strategic infrastructure ✈️ flexibility and assistance to ensure decarbonisation whilst preserving the unique economic and social benefits of air connectivity ✈️ continuation of State aid for smaller airports, to safeguard cohesion and territorial equality “More than ever, Europe finds itself at a crossroads, facing critical tests to its global position and leadership, both politically and economically,” said Brunini “The new era demands courage, vision, and unity from all of us, including our policymakers and regulators. We cannot face these unprecedented challenges with yesterday’s textbooks. This is particularly true for aviation.” Find the full press release below: https://shorturl.at/sOroW 📷 Elio Germani

LIVE FROM ROUTES EUROPE: Michael Stanton-Geddes, Director of Economics & Competition at ACI EUROPE, delivered a keynote address during Routes Europe 2024 in Aarhus, Denmark, discussing the latest trends currently impacting the European aviation industry. ✈ He highlighted the uneven character of air traffic recovery across Europe. While overall traffic nears pre-pandemic levels, only 44% of airports have fully rebounded. Southern & eastern Europe are seeing a stronger growth, indicating a shift in traffic flows. The market is transforming due to increased seasonality, a focus on international and leisure travel, and consolidation towards aircraft with a smaller passenger capacity. He also underlined the need for policy adjustments to support airports in adapting to these dynamics. Click here to read the full article from Aviation Week Network: https://shorturl.at/aeux9

Always a pleasure to address L'Union des Aéroports Français (UAF) on European market & policy developments - at their Annual Congress today in Paris. Truly difficult times for our French airport members. They were already burdened with the costs of security/State activities for which they are not fully compensated and with a regulatory framework that does not recognise their investment needs. But they now face plans from the Government to squeeze its aviation sector with up to €1 billion in additional taxes - which will over time destroy much more value than the semi-quick fix it would bring to the State budget… Unprecedented political instability also means no clear vision & strategy for the very sector that supports its massive tourism industry - with decarbonisation remaining a daunting challenge. All these issues were addressed heads on by UAF’s President Thomas Juin along with Nicolas Notebaert | VINCI Airports and Augustin de Romanet | Groupe ADP. And I must say it was difficult to find reasons for hope in the (nice) words from François DUROVRAY, the Minister in charge of transport. Great to also have our own Sébastien Colmant | ACI EUROPE giving an update on where we stand with another headache: the failed deployment of EDS C3 - the “new” cabin bag screening technology that was supposed to allow passengers to carry Liquids, Aerosols and Gels without any restriction…

Our latest edition of the European Aviation Overview #EAO gives you a great snapshot of what's happening around the European network for the week 21 to 27 October, and shows how traffic is gently declining as we reach the last week of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Summer schedules. Key facts include: 📌 For the last week of the Summer schedules, the network recorded 30,908 average daily flights ( ⬆ +5% vs 2023). 📌 Arrival punctuality improved by ⬆ 3.3 percentage points vs 2023 to 73.8%, and departure punctuality slightly improved ⬆ by 1.7 percentage points to 68.3%, but both indicators recorded a significant drop (of more than ⬇ 5 percentage points each) compared to the same week in 2019. 📌 The latest data from ACI EUROPE shows that passenger numbers at the top 40 airports over the June-to-August 2024 period reached 409 million, which demonstrates ⬆ a +6% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and is at 101% of pre-pandemic (2019) levels, even though the number of flights was ⬇ 5% down. Having grown up in a world of air travel, it’s hard to imagine that it was just 80 years ago that significant steps were being taken in the establishment of what is now the global air transport system. When 700 delegates met at the Stevens Hotel in Chicago for 37 days in late 1944, the world war which had ravaged many countries was still raging. And yet these negotiators were already putting in place a system that would make use of the advances in aerospace that the war had helped accelerate. Today, I am in Chicago to celebrate this milestone with ICAO – in the same spot where the Chicago Convention was signed. Honouring 80 years of collaboration, progress, and innovation in global aviation, we handed over an industry declaration to ICAO to reaffirm the sector’s commitment to a safe, sustainable, and connected future for aviation. In my blog post, I reflect on the achievements made and share my thoughts on how to future proof aviation for the next 80 years.
