Intern Spotlight! ✨ Name: Amaresh Kumar Tavva What school do you attend? I am getting my Masters of Science in Construction Management at Clemson University. How did you find your internship here at Ruby-Collins? I found this internship through one of my friends who was an intern last year! Then I applied online and started the interview process. Why did you choose a major/internship in the construction industry? I have a passion for working on real and practical projects. There is a deep sense of pride and satisfaction that comes with building structures from seeing a project through conception to completion. What do you do outside of school for fun? I love reading books, traveling to new places, learning how to invest, and watching lots of movies. What is your favorite part of your internship so far? My favorite part of this internship is working in the trenchless division. Being involved in a tunneling project has always been one of my dreams. What was your childhood dream job? Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well. The best experience I've had at my internship is teaching the students how to character design an Armadillo. I was pretty nervous at first because it was my first time teaching a real class. Once I started actually teaching however, all my anxiety went away, and I felt calm and confident. Teaching is fun once you get the hang of it!! The skills I hope to gain at Little Giant Ladder are to learn how to use CAD and how to test prototypes. These are both essential parts of engineering. You have to know how to use CAD to design the products. You also need to test the prototypes to know that they work and are safe. Therefore, these will be very valuable skills to learn. Intern Spotlight! ✨ Name: Denaria Phillips What school do you attend? I go to Georgia Southern University and am in my Junior Year. How did you find your internship here at Ruby-Collins? I found Ruby at a Georgia Southern STEM Fair. Why did you choose a major/internship in the construction industry? I chose an internship in the construction industry because I can put some of my engineering knowledge into real-world practice. I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to get hands-on experience and see how different parts of engineering and other trade skills come together to create big projects. I believe this experience will be beneficial in the future no matter what field I might enter post-college! What do you do outside of school for fun? In my spare time, I like to play video games and read books. I am quite active in my church's youth ministry, so I am always helping plan and execute events there as well. What is your favorite part of your internship so far? My favorite part has been learning the managerial side of things in the field. The longer I am here, I see how a construction project progresses well only when there is good upper management overseeing every division and keeping track of their needs and efficiency. What was your childhood dream job? I really didn't have one, but I briefly wanted to be a pediatrician.
