The upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election is at risk of extremist violence, driven by persistent sources of instability and unresolved issues that led to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack and other election challenges. While the risk of far-right extremist violence is more pronounced, the potential for far-left extremist violence should not be overlooked. The continued violence and recent uptick in attacks against political figures in Mexico, particularly in Zacatecas, including the most recent attack against members of the Monreal family, underscores a critical need for heightened security as elections approach. These acts of violence highlight vulnerabilities that must be addressed to ensure the safety of candidates and the integrity of the electoral process. Strengthening security measures and safeguarding public figures are essential steps to prevent further violence and protect democracy.
