In recognition of Older Americans Month, it's crucial to recognize that falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older Americans aged 65 and older. Each year, more than one in four older Americans falls, leading to numerous injuries, including fractures and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). In fact, falls are responsible for over 80% of all TBIs among those aged 65 and older. These injuries can significantly impact the quality of life, independence, and health of older adults, making falls a major public health concern. This statistic underscores the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures to protect our elderly population. As we continue to support our older community members, let’s focus on the importance of fall prevention. For more information on fall prevention and how you can help, visit the CDC’s falls prevention page. During this Older Americans Month, let's commit to creating safer environments and providing the resources needed to prevent falls among our elderly population. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of older adults by focusing on proactive measures to ensure their safety and well-being.

Roughly 1 in 4 Americans aged 65 and older—that’s more than 14 million people!—suffer a fall each year. Not only are falls the leading cause of injury among this age group, but they’re also the #1 cause of concussions as well. We tend to think of falls as a part of getting older—something that goes hand-in-hand with changes in balance and mobility. However, falls aren’t inevitable among older adults. In fact, many of them can be prevented with a little education and a few tweaks to their daily lives. That’s why Falls Prevention Awareness Week is so important. Set for September 23-27 and led by CAN Coalition member National Council on Aging (NCOA), Falls Prevention Awareness Week is a national observance to help raise awareness on preventing falls, reducing the risk of falls, and helping older adults live without the fear of falling. In our latest blog, we chat with Kathy Cameron, Senior Director of NCOA’s Center for Healthy Aging, about the misconceptions that often surround older adult falls, why concussion symptoms can be even riskier for older adults who have experienced a fall, and four actions to reduce fall risks: https://bit.ly/47G9HLl

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed on June 15, signifies our collective struggle against the mistreatment of older adults. Elder abuse is not only an individual problem; it's a community and societal issue that reminds us to promote respect and dignity for older adults. With a collaborative strategy in place, Wellpoint works in tandem with healthcare providers to detect early signs of elder abuse. We have taken great strides to implement caregiver education programs, because in many cases, the caregivers are the first line of defense in recognizing indicators of abuse. We are not just advocating prevention, but actively invested in providing solutions to help prevent elder abuse. https://ow.ly/Z66G30sE5OP
