Meet our intern, Zoe van Bentum, a Politics and International Relations student at the University of Sydney. Zoe’s been passionate about #journalism and storytelling since she was young. At Kicker Communications, she combines her love for strategic communications and creativity to make a positive impact through her work. ✨ What first sparked your interest in a career in public relations? My journey in pursuing a career in #PR stems from my diverse academic, creative and professional background. Studying Politics and International Relations at the University of Sydney exposed me to the power of communication and storytelling in shaping public opinion, initially drawing my interest in journalism. Moreover, my creative side has always played a significant role. From a young age, I’ve been involved in performance arts and cooking, which taught me the importance of creativity in connecting with people and telling compelling stories. My experience in fine dining with Fink marked a turning point, igniting my passion for the hospitality industry and helping #SMBs. It underscored the vital role of effective communication in a fast-paced, high-profile setting. Public relations is one of the few career paths that seamlessly combines my interests in journalism, creativity and business. At Kicker Communications, I help craft strategic messages, engage with diverse audiences and support businesses in reaching their goals. PR is the perfect convergence of my passions, providing a dynamic and fulfilling career that utilises my skills and interests. 🏆 What has been the most rewarding part of your internship? The most fulfilling part of my internship at Kicker Communications has been seeing our hard work translate into measurable success. Whether launching a social media campaign or crafting a press release, it’s rewarding to see these efforts accomplish outstanding results for clients and help them achieve their goals. Additionally, the mentorship from the Kicker team has been invaluable. Everyone’s guidance has given me a deeper understanding of PR- from strategic communication to media relations, making this internship both educational and enjoyable.

This fall, I will be completing my Digital Communication, Information and Media minor at Rutgers University by completing a capstone project centered around the technologies shaping our modern digital landscape. During my summer internship, one of the most pressing questions on my mind was how a potential career in communications would be affected by burgeoning AI technologies. In this article, Professor Keri Stephens of the Moody College of Communications touches upon the positives and negatives of implementing AI into corporate communications. As this technology evolves, I believe it is crucial for professionals to adapt thoughtfully, balancing caution with innovation to harness AI's potential while maintaining core human skills and ethical standards. #DCIMCapstone

Strategic Communications Leader in Public Policy, Tech & Nonprofit. Entrepreneur. Multilingual Speaker. Community Builder.
When I was working at the intersection of law and public policy, I always thought of public relations (PR) as more of a skill rather than a career and I couldn’t be more wrong. If you’re passionate about communication, storytelling, and building relationships, then a career in PR could be a great fit for you. If you're considering a career transition, here are 5 tips to get you started: 1️⃣ Master Communication: Hone in your writing and speaking skills to effectively convey messages. 2️⃣ Build Your Network: Attend industry events, connect with professionals, and utilize LinkedIn to expand your circle. 3️⃣ Gain Experience: Internships, volunteer work, and freelance projects are key to building your resume and learning the ropes. 4️⃣ Stay Informed: Keep up with current events, industry trends, and PR best practices to stay ahead of the curve. 5️⃣ Find Your Niche Expertise: Develop an indispensable skill and go all in on it i.e. media relations, writing, pitching, public speaking, creative direction, etc. #PRCareer #PublicRelationsTips #CareerTips #PRinCanada
