🎧At the beginning of this month, I completed another remote simultaneous interpreting assignment, focusing on retail, business development, consumer centricity and the empowerment of AI. This was my first experience interpreting via Olyusei, an innovative RSI system. I was impressed by the platform's interface and comprehensive functions, which enable interpreters to “mute”, switch different language channels effortlessly and signal your virtual booth mates by simply clicking “ready for handover”. It was a mind-blowing event, where renowned keynote speakers and business partners shared their thought-provoking ideas. As one of the interpreters, I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment and had the privilege of absorbing invaluable insights. 🌟Here are some of my biggest takeaways: · Embrace AI and other technologies. Instead of viewing AI as a replacement, see it as an enhancer. It is hard to talk about technology development these days without thinking of AI. How to improve our efficiency and enhance our creativity by leveraging intelligence is a question for all of us. · Be a trailblazer and never rely on one-size-fits-all solutions. Sometimes, we need to think outside the box and find unique answers to underlying questions that decide our identity. · Stay composed and carry on. Unexpected technical issues are inevitable, especially in RSI assignments. Despite technical hiccups, we interpreters must remain calm, utilise our problem-solving skills and continue delivering quality service. Last but not least, it was really a pleasure to work with Islam Younis and SiHui Cao again. Thank you very much for your trust and support. Until next time! #simultaneousinterpreting #conferenceinterpreting #interpreting

What does the following statement mean? "Daisy isn’t driving to London tomorrow." If you think the answer is straightforward, think again. Try placing emphasis on the different words, and you’ll see how its meaning changes each time. This seemingly simple sentence can teach us a lot about communication and language. It also shows us why understanding speech is much more than simply transcribing words. Audience’s experiences of watching media content can also be drastically changed by changing the availability of non-speech captions like [laughter] or [applause]. With Sentiments and now Audio Events, Speechmatics are moving beyond speech-to-text and into a world where we seek to understand the richness and nuance of communication. 🔮 How much nuance & insight is missed if you’re working with simple text instead of enriched speech? To highlight just how *not* straightforward a simple text-based utterance like the “Daisy isn’t driving to London tomorrow” can be, and the spectrum of enrichment available to the speech signal of the spoken word modality, consider the following exhaustive list of emphatic permutations and the meanings they can serve to implicate. 𝗗𝗔𝗜𝗦𝗬 isn’t driving to London tomorrow… ⟿ it’s her partner who’s driving them in. Daisy 𝗜𝗦𝗡’𝗧 driving to London tomorrow… ⟿ why would you think she is? Daisy isn’t 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 to London tomorrow… ⟿ I saw her train ticket already printed on her desk. Daisy isn’t driving 𝗧𝗢 London tomorrow… ⟿ she’ll be returning *from* London — she’s there now! Daisy isn’t driving to 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗢𝗡 tomorrow… ⟿ did you forget? The client dinner is in to Bath. Daisy isn’t driving to London 𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗥𝗢𝗪… ⟿ she’s scheduled our team meeting for Monday, silly. Intonational emphasis placed on an individual word is typically discussed as “focus” (or VERUM focus) in the theoretical literature, and this “focusing” of a word is understood to highlight a list of its contextually salient alternatives, from which alternative propositions can be constructed and selected as relevant to the conversation. These problems are extremely challenging to model, and Speechmatics is working to crack the code so your organization doesn’t have to. 😉 #NLU #NLP #focus #semantics #speechtotext #ASR #LLM #genAI #AI #speechintelligence
