🏖️ What comes to your mind when you hear ‘Terminal Beach’? A desolate, remote, abandoned beach? It honestly sounds frightful. However, if you thought of the exhibition in the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna, you’d be right! 🖼️ In my previous post, I shared that I recently visited Vienna and had a chance to visit the Hundertwasser Village and Museum; I was also lucky to have an opportunity to explore the MAK in Vienna. 🌲 One of the exhibitions I saw in the MAK was ‘Terminal Beach’ by Troika. ‘Terminal Beach’ offered a striking exploration of climate change and digital evolution. It features a video of a robot in black fur chopping down the last tree on Earth, paired with a soundscape of radio waves mimicking birdsong. The exhibition continued with 3D-printed digital twins of museum objects inhabiting a simulated flooded landscape. 🤔 The multi-sensory exhibition was not only immersive but also truly thought-provoking! Watching the robot destroy the last tree probed me to think about the dire state of our Earth. 🌍 Experiencing the ‘Terminal Beach’ exhibition showed me how art can highlight the harsh realities of the world and simultaneously encourage us to reflect on our actions (not just as individuals but as a community too) as well as their consequences to our environment. 🌍 ‘Terminal Beach’ has developed my appreciation for how art can act as a reflection of issues concerning our Earth. An uncanny immersive experience on the agricultural culture that gives birth to the panighíri, the Greek rural feast, as a condition of togetherness that engulfs absences and dysfunctionalities, celebration and longing.
