It’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Being diagnosed with cancer is an overwhelming experience, and when patients leave the hospital with a mountain of leaflets, it can feel daunting. Imagine trying to carry all that information that can’t fit in a bag, while already processing life-changing news. A simple change, like providing a discreet envelope with all the necessary information, allows patients to leave with dignity and feel more in control. It’s these small (brilliant basics), compassionate touches that make all the difference in patient care. Sometimes, it’s not just about what we give, but how we give it. It was a sunny afternoon in Dallas. Families were relaxing. Children were playing in the park. My first thought? We need to accelerate the transformation to value-based care! I know that’s an odd reaction to such pleasant surroundings, but hear me out. 😊 Today, the U.S. health care system is missing the mark in crucial areas. Take cancer, for example. Given the diagnostic tools at our fingertips, we shouldn’t miss breast and colorectal cancer screening and end up diagnosing the conditions at Stage 4. VBC allows doctors to spend more time with patients and deliver better outcomes. That means more opportunities to catch and treat illnesses before they become intractable. VBC also lets healthcare organizations and providers trade the fee-for-service hamster wheel for a more stable financial environment. Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust (WAST) clinicians avoided an unnecessary hospital visit for a vulnerable cancer patient thanks to their access to Enhanced Advice & Guidance via Consultant Connect. Since 2020, they have had access to the service, where they can also use pre-programmed Bypass Numbers, enabling them to quickly speak with specialists over the phone to discuss patient care. Last week our CEO, Dr Jen Kelly attended the first-ever taskforce for childhood cancer in parliamentary history. Jen presented 4 key asks at the Westminster working group which, if backed by Government, will increase earlier diagnosis alongside more hopeful outcomes for individuals affected by the devastating disease. Our 4 key asks included: 1) Printing of our signs and symptoms awareness cards in all personal child health records (infant red books) nationally as standard. (currently they are in around 350,000 of the 700,000 printed each year) 2) Creation of a public health campaign for the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer 3) Improve Education for health professionals in identifying signs and symptoms of childhood cancer 4) Reduced barriers between primary and secondary care.
