As we step into August 2024, it's a good time to reflect on the landmark findings of the OPTiMISE trial published in The Lancet this July. The study offers promising insights into the potential for safely reducing antihypertensive medications. Remarkably, 50% of participants managed to reduce their medication without an increase in hospital visits or mortality. This is particularly significant for people aged 80 and above with controlled blood pressure who are taking two or more blood pressure medications. It’s a reminder of the importance of personalized care and the potential benefits of deprescribing in appropriate situations.
