River Geomorphology 🌊 What happens when you install a dam or a weir and how the sediment transport changes ⁉ When the dam is installed, we see a classic disruption in sediment transport continuity. Coarse transport essentially ceases through the dam until deposition builds a higher stream bed. Sediment is blown out below the dam (often scoured to bedrock in the real world) This is the well known "hungry water" effect seen below dams. 💧 👉 At low-water crossings, we often see this condition, manifested as a wide, sediment-filled channel with low banks upstream of the bridge. This contrasts with a deep, scoured channel below, sometimes with high, unstable banks. #water #sediment #dams #river

Just how effective are silt fence, straw wattle, and alternative sediment barriers in sediment retention? It can cost time and money when a sediment control BMP doesn’t live up to claims or expectations. POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WITH EXISTING FIELD TEST CLAIMS There is little test data to support the effectiveness of sediment retention devices (SRDs). Most companies offer limited or no documentation to support the effectiveness of their products. When there is test data provided: The test data that is made available can be developed using widely different protocols and sometimes incomplete data. Some testing only provides a snapshot of time not representing the whole rain event. Some companies have even made claims using test data that was taken part way through the test, rather than the results after the test was finished. Further to my previous post about the largest open pit mine made by man on the earth planet, on April 10, 2013, a giant landslide occurred in the Bingham Canyon copper mine, Utah, USA. About 150 million tons of rocks failed that evening. The Manefay Landslide, as it was termed after the failure, was predicted prior to the collapse and the site had been evacuated.
