An arc flash in a PV module string during disconnection in daytime at full load can happen due to several specific factors related to the nature of PV systems and electrical principles: High DC Voltage: PV systems generate direct current (DC), which is more likely to sustain an arc than alternating current (AC). When disconnecting a live DC circuit under load, the high voltage can cause a significant arc. Full Load Current: During full load, the current flowing through the system is at its maximum. Disconnecting under these conditions can result in a substantial arc because the interruption of the current path generates a high-energy arc. Inductive Components: PV systems can have inductive components (like coils or transformers) that can store energy. When the circuit is opened, this stored energy can be released suddenly, contributing to the formation of an arc. Lack of Proper Disconnects: If the system lacks proper DC-rated disconnect switches designed to handle the load, manually disconnecting the system can cause an arc flash. DC-rated switches are specifically designed to minimize arcing. Disconnect Switch Condition: Even if proper DC-rated disconnect switches are present, their condition matters. Worn or damaged contacts within the switch can increase resistance and arcing potential during disconnection. Environmental Conditions: External conditions, such as moisture, dust, or other contaminants, can increase the likelihood of arcing by providing conductive paths or reducing the insulation resistance of components. Here’s how an arc flash can happen during disconnection: Initiation: When a connection is interrupted under full load, an arc can initiate at the point of disconnection due to the high DC voltage and current. Sustenance: Unlike AC, which crosses zero voltage and current periodically, DC does not have a natural zero-crossing point. This characteristic allows an arc to sustain itself longer once initiated. Energy Release: The energy stored in the PV system components (like capacitors and inductors) can release suddenly, feeding the arc and making it more intense. Ionization Path: The arc ionizes the air between the contacts, creating a plasma channel that allows current to continue flowing even after physical separation. This ionized path can sustain the arc until the energy dissipates or an external intervention occurs. To prevent such incidents, always ensure to: Use proper DC-rated disconnect switches. Disconnect the system when it's under minimal load or shaded conditions, if possible. Regularly maintain and inspect all electrical components and connections. Follow safe work practices and use personal protective equipment (PPE) when working on live PV systems.

Pakistan is getting ready to use more renewable energy, and 𝐇𝐕𝐃𝐂 transmission systems could be a game-changer. Our 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬 in Sindh and 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 in Punjab and Balochistan are often far from cities, so we need a better way to move power. That's where HVDC comes in....Let's look at some real numbers. Our current 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗸𝗩 𝗔𝗖 lines lose about 𝟕-𝟖% of power for every 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐤𝐦. But an 𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝐤𝐕 𝐇𝐕𝐃𝐂 line? It loses less than 𝟑% 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 the same distance. That's a big difference!..Here's an example: Let's say we're moving 𝟯𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗪 of power from Thar to central Punjab, about 𝟗𝟎𝟎 𝐤𝐦 away:.1. 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗸𝗩 𝗔𝗖, We'd lose about 𝟐𝟏𝟎 𝐌𝐖 (7% of 3000 MW)2. 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝐤𝐕 𝐇𝐕𝐃𝐂, We'd only lose about 𝟖𝟏 𝐌𝐖 (2.7% of 3000 MW)..We'd save 𝟏𝟐𝟗 𝐌𝐖 - enough to power any small city...HVDC is also great for our grid stability. It can quickly adjust power flow, which helps when using more wind and solar power that can change throughout the day....It's high time NTDC seriously considered HVDC for our future transmission planning. With projects like 𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐀-𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 already incorporating HVDC, we have a golden opportunity to build local expertise. #HVDC #Renewablenergy #Pakistangrid # Powerengineering
