Knowledge and understanding of trauma and trauma-informed care theories, frameworks and topics are very important. That’s the whole ‘informed’ part of trauma-informed care. But then what? How do we put that knowledge into actual care? Trauma-informed care is not a theory it’s a living framework. It’s skill based. It’s actionable. It’s meant to be seen and felt. If we want a trauma-informed future we need to lead and live this work out loud l. Key principles of safety, trust, inclusion, consent, collaboration, cultural humility, etc aren’t meant to be intentions but rather action based skills. How do you promote safety? How are you practice inclusion? How are you centering consent and choice? Building your skill set and actively infusing it into your specific job or workspace is integrative trauma-informed care. Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately as a new and establishing clinical practice owner: I don’t need to nor should I take every client. Now hear me out, because it’s not that I don’t want each and every client that has ever been referred to me or even mentioned to me. But sometimes, I am NOT the best fit. Sometimes there are practices that use different setting or modalities or are closer to an individual or could maybe get their services started sooner. Sometimes there are other options that would be better for a specific individual. This realization wasn’t easy to swallow. I mean, of course, I want to be the best for everyone who walks through my door. But the truth is, I might not be the best fit for everyone. In the field of ABA practices, there’s often an emphasis on quantity over the importance of finding the best fit for each family. I believe it’s crucial to prioritize a more cohesive and comprehensive approach, offering families a range of options so they can make informed decisions that align with their needs and preferences. Embracing this mindset fosters empowerment and ensures that every individual receives the best care possible.
