Shocking discovery but I think that most knew this would be the outcome to their investigation. To think that schools wouldn't be in a deficit after slashing much needed funding for decades would be ludicrous. So, how do we fix this? Firstly, we need to ensure that ALL schools are funded correctly. If you underfund a school, you will get underperformance. To stop this, the government need to re-allocate their budgets to make sure the children have necessary tools to learn. Oh look, problem solved. No need for schools to be in a deficit if they had been properly funded. it's kind of a 'duh' moment. Where does the money come from? Well, that would be up for debate and is subjective. However, we all saw the importance that education has in society and the economy, during covid. We are keen to hear your opinion..
Council primary schools in deficit rocket 62%

In 2021/22, 22.5% of pupils were recorded as persistently absent. This equates to around 1.6 million pupils. Some groups of pupils are more likely to be absent or persistently absent than others. For example, in 2021/22, 37.2% of free school meal eligible pupils were persistently absent compared with 17.5% of pupils that were not eligible. Persistent absence not only affects academic achievement but also hinders personal and social development. By implementing targeted interventions and support systems to ensure every student has equal access to education, we can tackle this issue head on. Collaboration between schools, government agencies, and community organisations is key to addressing this issue effectively. Let's work together to create a culture where every child can thrive and succeed in their educational journey. Today is World Teachers’ Day, a reminder of how critical teachers are to world’s development. In our work in School and Education Improvement projects, we have learnt that interventions that do not centre teachers, be it infrastructure support, provisioning of resources or learner performance programmes, are unlikely to produce maximum desired impact.
