How’d you like to be at #CrowdStrike today? The company whose mission is to keep companies from having IT security meltdowns inadvertently took a blowtorch to some of the most important industries on earth. But there’s also a lesson to be learned, and it’s something that I’ve coached clients on: Do not authorize companies like CrowdStrike to publish news releases or public-facing case studies about your business relationship. Why? Because hundreds of reporters worldwide started Googling CrowdStrike today, and those documents are going to surface. Then, those client companies are going to get calls from media outlets. Then those stories will hit the news cycle, and the companies referenced suddenly are having a bad—or worse—day. I don’t care what sort of deal the sales rep at the tech company provided. I don’t care that “Our IT group really wants to strengthen that relationship for the next three-year agreement.” Whatever the potential savings might be, it’s not worth a percentage of a company’s brand value and good name when the seemingly inevitable crisis hits. #CrisisManagement #IssuesManagement #CyberSecurity
