€8.2 Millions Horizon funded ECHO project aims to pioneer a cutting-edge, sustainable, and versatile thermal energy storage system. Our focus lies in seamlessly integrating advanced storage materials, innovative reactors, batch storages, and state-of-the-art digital control mechanisms. This synergy enables enduring thermal energy storage while significantly shifting loads, effectively catering to both heating and cooling demands. Our core strength lies in combining advanced thermochemical materials (TCMs) and phase change materials (PCMs) to create an innovative, compact, and intelligent TES solution. This solution will cater to space heating, cooling, and hot water production needs. Additionally, it can be optionally augmented with ice storage to address substantial cooling requirements. The ultimate goal of the ECHO project is to revolutionize energy storage, offering a comprehensive and efficient solution for grid stabilisation applications.

The rate at which new generation capacity can be deployed isn’t always considered in long term energy planning. In my latest paper together with Jean-Yves Bourmaud Robin Girard Georges Kariniotakis (freely accessible here: https://lnkd.in/eatygaKg), we show that considering even ambitious development rates significantly increases total system costs and drastically changes the structure of the optimal generation mix, stressing how much our hopes of meeting climate targets hinge on our ability to roll-out new low-carbon infrastructure fast enough. Provided our current mindset vis-à-vis energy demand perpetuates, the main issue facing power system planners should perhaps less be what low-carbon technology or combination of technologies to build, and more the acceleration of the construction of all currently available low-carbon technologies. https://lnkd.in/efSnyxBc
