Very proud of our Child Safety Research Team and a special shoutout to our brilliant researcher, Eunha Yun, for pioneering a unique approach to combating grooming. Traditionally seen as a textual violation, grooming has a massive behavioral component that demands a nuanced understanding. Groomers adapt their tactics based on platform capabilities, behaving differently on platforms where direct messaging is possible versus where it is not. They use different terms depending on the language, operate from fake profiles, and often shift explicit discourse to private messaging apps. Our research highlights that the most fundamental aspect of grooming isn't just what they write, but who they write to, how many users they target and the behavioral characteristics of both the potential groomer and victim.
