This is for all my friends and former colleagues at Ubisoft. It’s a long post, I know, and I don’t usually post much, but bear with me 😊 I’ve been following the recent turmoil surrounding Ubisoft’s performance, and it’s disheartening to see the company struggling, even though I’m no longer part of the amazing group I worked with for almost 15 years. As a gamer myself, like many in the community, I’ve had my share of complaints about Ubisoft’s games. I didn’t voice them while I was with the company, mainly because I wasn’t in a position to comment and my department couldn’t influence the creative or development process of the titles. As an employee, I was aware of how the company was structured, and I often questioned some management decisions. While I may have been wrong in some cases, I’m sure I was right in criticizing many others. A key issue was having too many people in the management chain, some overseeing just one subordinate, and many lacking the skills needed, which created confusion and slowed project progress. I know of cases where people were promoted after a short time, primarily because they checked certain boxes on a diversity and inclusion list, while others with 10 or 15 years of dedicated service were overlooked. I’ve had both good and bad managers, but only two great ones — skilled, empathetic, and committed to helping others grow. Sadly, many lacked a true understanding of Ubisoft’s business, the gaming industry, or its values. How can such individuals manage a company that makes ... games? To my former colleagues, now may be the time to truly EXPRESS YOURSELF — you know what I mean. I didn’t take that chance seriously when I had it, and I understand why others haven’t either. But for those who know what Ubisoft needs, speak out. And let’s hope that in the future, people will be hired and promoted based on their professional skills, not because they belong to a certain social group, have a specific gender identity, skin tone, or hold particular political, social, or religious views. A friend and colleague at Ubisoft once said it’s frustrating that despite having the experience, talent, tools, and resources, Ubisoft hasn’t made a game on the level of GTA or Red Dead Redemption. The potential is there, and I hope Ubisoft can find its way back to the top of the AAA gaming industry.
