Recent advancements in medical technology have shifted the focus of clinicians from performing a thorough clinical examination towards, ordering a random set of lab tests which seems time-saving for them 6 . Although the outburst of many new technologies has modified the doctor-patient relationship, it cannot replace the touch of a physician's hand to elicit tenderness in the abdomen or to palpate the pulse which creates a sense of care and kindness 1 . Such advancements which are causing a decline in the practicality of the physical exam, are leading to a deterioration in the clinical skills of doctors which makes the doctor incompetent to deal with acute issues faced by the patient, as he becomes reliant on medical technology https://lnkd.in/dPBdeE6M

Learning about new technology and innovation within medical device orgs is one of my favorite parts of the job. As I’ve had the opportunity to place for numerous startups and emerging divisions here’s a few key takeaways I’ve seen on “Innovation” within the healthcare segment. #1 Innovation Advances Patient Care: ·      Breakthrough tech always trickles down to the patient and getting a front row seat to that as a medical device salesperson has been so rewarding. From minimally invasive procedures to personalized treatments, innovative devices enable safer, more efficient, and effective healthcare solutions, improving the lives of countless patients. #2 Innovation Addresses Unmet Market Needs: ·      Seeing a new therapy or product that accelerates treatment or fills a previous gap is the definition of innovation within this industry. By pushing the boundaries of what is possible, companies can offer hope to patients and make a significant impact on public health. #3 Innovation Creates a Major Economic Impact: ·      Innovation spurs economic growth and creates job opportunities. As companies develop and commercialize innovative devices, they contribute to economic growth while supporting a labor market dedicated to improving patient care. 

I've been working on medical devices for as long as I can remember. As an academic, it became clear to me that it is very hard to develop these devices in a vacuum, without the environment in which they will be deployed. I saw that we had a choice - we could build these devices on a case-by-case basis or we could think of how to solve the problem once and for all. The London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE) came to me as a solution to try to solve this at scale, well beyond one person or one academic. I realised that if you want to bring a device into clinical reality and create a positive impact for patients, you need to get industry partners, the healthcare system, and patients themselves engaged very early on in the process. In the #MedTech sector, most of the innovation is delivered by smaller start-ups or university spinouts, which are companies whose commercialisation journey originates from research done in university. Meanwhile, translation at scale is achieved by a few large companies with the resources to do so. I believe that bringing both sides of this equation together is the key to creating positive impact at pace, and LIHE is the all-encompassing framework that can make this possible.
