Paris 2024’s ambitious sustainability goals mark a turning point for the Olympics. Targeting a carbon footprint half that of previous games, Paris is setting a high bar for environmental responsibility in sports. The emphasis on recycled materials and renewable energy demonstrates a commitment to reducing waste and emissions. The decision to build only two new venues, with the aquatic center featuring solar panels and recycled seats, underscores a move towards minimizing construction impact. This approach contrasts sharply with previous games, where numerous new facilities often led to significant environmental degradation. Connecting stadiums to the public electricity grid and promoting a 60km cycling network between venues showcases Paris 2024’s commitment to eco-friendly transportation. These measures, combined with France’s ban on short-haul flights, reflect a comprehensive approach to reducing travel emissions. However, challenges remain. Spectator travel is expected to account for a significant portion of emissions.
