“I don’t see my inability to walk as a problem. It is my inability to access certain spaces that makes life challenging.” - Nadina LaSpina, an Italian-American disability rights activist, teacher, and author #WednesdayWisdom #Accessibility #DisabilityPrideMonth

In addition to the book, Demystifying Disability, this Ted Talk is an excellent description of life with disability.
Stella Young was a fearless Australian disability rights activist and comedian known for her sharp wit and candid humor in challenging societal perceptions of disability. She passed away in 2014, but through her advocacy work and viral TED Talk, she left a lasting global impact on promoting inclusivity and equality for people with disabilities. In 2012, she coined the term #InspirationPorn to describe the portrayal of persons with disabilities as inspirational solely - or in part - on the basis of their disability. When you're asked to implement disability inclusion practices, it's not an added burden. It's simply upholding basic human rights. #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityRights #Accessibility #Ableism #Equity #Equality #HumanRights

Accessible experiences are the ultimate inclusive customer experience. Accessibility | Association Management | Certification | Virtual Events & Collaboration
So when someone asks you to include disabled people and accessibility, responding that you are being attacked may not be the flex you think it is. p.s. If you're a business in the US, you may REALLY want to rethink how you respond to requests to be inclusive of disability and not force disabled people to explain to you why they need access. p.p.s. Using ephemisms about explaining a person's "special needs" is also not heading toward equity and human rights. There's nothing special about equitable access. p.p.p.s. Forcing (we ask nicely)disabled people to disclose or prove their specific disability is also not heading toward equity and human rights.

I am often asked for advice on how to “sell” accessible and inclusive garden design in public and private spaces. I can see these people hope for a impenetrable list of justifications and benefits they can pass on to get projects greenlit. My advice is always to turn the tables and simply ask for a justification why these spaces shouldn’t be universally designed and inclusive for all. It’s often met with a bit of shock to be honest. Because we just don’t think reflexively enough about the idea that access and inclusion (I believe these things are different too btw) is a basic human right. So I loved seeing this as it re-affirms my position within greenspace design. AND this approach applies to all disadvantaged groups too. Not just within disability. #greenspace #landscapedesign #therapeutichorticulture #inclusion #disability #disabilityrights
